The Opportunity
Senior post‑doctoral research scientist position focused on developing a novel cardiac drug‑screening platform. The role is based at the University of Edinburgh and will work under the guidance of Professor Shareen Forbes. Key activities include generation of human stem cell–derived iPSC cardiospheroids, biochemical and molecular testing, and engagement in commercialisation strategy. The position also supports the further development of a prototype biomedical instrument designed to screen for drug‑induced cardiac arrhythmias, including comparison with electrophysiological measurements and downstream molecular/cellular analyses.
Collaboration with engineers at Heriot‑Watt University (Dr Euan Brown) and scientists in drug discovery (Professor Neil Carragher) will drive device optimisation, including the creation of an automated throughput system for cardiospheroid handling. Participation in implementing a Quality Management System to ensure ISO compatibility and contribution to report writing, IP reviews, business planning, and regulatory documentation are additional responsibilities.
Responsibilities
* Generate and characterize human iPSC‑derived cardiospheroids.
* Perform biochemical, molecular, imaging and statistical analyses of cardiospheroids.
* Compare electrophysiological responses with standard measurements and other modalities.
* Collaborate with engineers and drug‑discovery scientists to optimise device performance.
* Contribute to QMS implementation, ISO compliance and regulatory documentation.
* Engage in business planning, IP review, and commercialisation strategy development.
Qualifications
* Experience in stem cell organoid generation.
* Proficiency in a wide range of molecular biology techniques, imaging software and statistical analysis.
* Strong teamwork and cross‑disciplinary communication skills.
* Capability to think critically and conduct independent research.
* Record of peer‑reviewed publications.
