Overview
We are seeking a Manager to lead our Economic Crime Unit (ECU), part of the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The successful candidate will lead a specialist team dedicated to removing the financial benefit from criminals. You will be the strategic lead for managing financial investigations to ensure we fulfil our obligations under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
You will be proactive with a strong focus on continually improving how we work. This role requires leadership across multiple teams and collaboration with internal colleagues and external partners to influence senior stakeholders and support the Environment Agency’s priorities.
Responsibilities
* Lead two Team Leaders (Asset Denial Team and Money Laundering Investigation Team) and a Senior Financial Intelligence Officer. Provide strong leadership, develop your team, and manage performance and delivery.
* Set strategic direction for financial investigations and POCA compliance; continually improve processes and documentation.
* Collaborate with internal teams (Investigatory Teams, Intelligence & Partnerships, Legal) and external partners (Police, National Crime Agency, HMRC); influence senior levels to align with EA priorities.
* Support the wider organisation by sharing lessons learned, contributing to technical documentation, and advising enforcement officers nationwide.
* Contribute to the ECU’s role within the organisation and help increase understanding of POCA legislation.
The Team
The Economic Crime Unit comprises two teams—the Asset Denial Team and the Money Laundering Investigations Team—consisting of Financial Investigators, Financial Intelligence Officers, and Crime Analysts. The ECU is a nationally dispersed team working with enforcement staff and partners across the country and handles serious, complex crime related to organised networks.
Experience and Skills Required
* Exceptional leadership skills, ideally with experience leading a dispersed team.
* Good understanding of financial investigations and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
* Experience in:
o Working in the law enforcement sector and understanding the National Intelligence Model
o Effective communication, including delivering feedback, managing performance, and building relationships with external stakeholders
o Working under pressure and prioritising a varied workload
o Identifying areas for improvement and leading changes to working practices
o Developing and enhancing the capability of a team and the individuals within it
Additional Information
This is a hybrid role; you’ll work flexibly from home and your nearest office. Travel across the country for meetings and operational duties is required. Incident response is a central part of our work; you may be on an incident role and available to respond or provide business continuity support during incidents.
