PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the world's first utility-scale, 1 million-plus qubit quantum computer, powered by breakthroughs in silicon photonics and quantum architecture. We were founded in 2015 by the world's foremost experts in photonic quantum computing and have assembled a world class team dedicated to bringing the world-changing benefits of quantum computing into reality. Quantum computing is anticipated to unlock the solutions to otherwise impossible computational tasks, with impact across science, technology, and business. By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers are expected to dramatically outperform even the most powerful existing (or future) supercomputers and offer the potential to enable extraordinary advances across a broad range of applications including climate, energy, healthcare, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and more, as well as deliver entirely new industries. PsiQuantum is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of quantum computing. We have already demonstrated that it's possible to manufacture core quantum components using the standard and scalable manufacturing processes of a world-leading semiconductor fab. Our team is working across the full stack of quantum computing, from hardware design, manufacturing, and packaging through to quantum architecture and quantum algorithms. We're a highly integrated, collaborative group and love tackling problems that span across interfaces. There's more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey Job Summary: We are looking for a motivated research physicist/engineer who will be responsible for the design and execution of R&D experiments for the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer. The candidate will collaborate across multiple disciplines including quantum information, photonics, integrated optics, electronics, cryogenics, and software to develop and validate quantum systems. The successful candidate will work on engineering projects within PsiQuantum's UK R&D facility as well as interface broadly with PsiQuantum's International engineering teams. Responsibilities: Lead the design and execution of complex quantum experiments and work closely with engineering teams to communicate device-level and system-level learnings. Validate and benchmark optical quantum computing hardware performance. Develop & document an understanding of how component performance affects system performance. Develop calibration, self-test, and control procedures for novel quantum photonic systems. Collect, analyse & present experimental data. Work with other engineering teams to ensure that data informs engineering models for system performance. Debug complex systems and work with other engineering teams to conduct failure analysis and resolve design or manufacturing issues as appropriate. Communicate experimental outcomes broadly to internal stakeholders. Select the equipment required for specialized tests and coordinating the use of existing equipment. Formulate meaningful experimental reports. This can include some simulation work. Prioritizing work according to the team vision and contributing to the development of the team. Experience/Qualifications: PhD or equivalent experience in experimental Physics, or a related field. Demonstrated ability to design and execute complex experiments and engineering tests in a multi-disciplinary environment. Broad technical knowledge with ability to dive deep into required technical areas of our systems including optical & electrical hardware and control software. Software development for instrumentation, controls, and test equipment (python preferred). Demonstrated experience with some, or all, of the following is preferred: Quantum optics, optics Integrated opto-electronics, silicon photonics Quantum information concepts Quantum state tomography Cryogenic systems Programming in Python/Mathematica Proven team player with an ability to work effectively across departments, sites, time zones. Ability to work independently with limited direction and own responsibility for delivering validation objectives. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences including senior leadership and technical experts. Experience leading technical projects. Experience working with leading edge technologies. Desired knowledge, Skills, and Abilities in some/all of the following: Linear optics, fiber optics, integrated optics. Laser optics (physics, operation, and safety), work with pulsed lasers. Single photon measurements, coincidences, statistics, quantum interference. Experimental physics, design of control systems. Photonics testing, coupling to integrated circuits, experiment automation. Operation of cryogenic equipment. Quantum optics theory. Nonlinear optics theory. Quantum information theory. PsiQuantum provides equal employment opportunity for all applicants and employees.
