Job Description
STEP is a bold and ambitious programme, developing pioneering new technologies to achieve its goals. We generate significant intellectual property to inspire and enable the fusion industry, strengthening the UK’s leadership.
As the programme advances and partners join, you will lead various IP matters related to one of the STEP technology streams.
Your responsibilities include identifying, protecting, and managing IP, performing landscape and risk analyses, and advising technical teams on IP issues.
Key Accountabilities
* Client Counselling: Advise technologists and engineers on IP, ensure decisions align with strategy, build relationships, and serve as the main contact for the technology stream.
* Identifying & Protecting Innovation: Support IP identification, advise on protection options, record IP, assess patentability, manage patent applications, and explore commercialization opportunities.
* Landscape & Risk Analysis: Conduct landscape searches, assess relevance, identify risks, and communicate strategies.
* IP Portfolio Management: Develop management processes, set KPIs, control budgets, and align IP portfolio with strategic goals.
* IP Training: Prepare and deliver training materials, respond to training requests, and manage the training register.

Qualifications
Essential:
* Patent Attorney UK/EU qualified with PQE.
* Experience advising clients and managing IP matters.
* Invention identification, prior art review, patent drafting, and prosecution experience.
* IP portfolio management skills and stakeholder reporting.
* Ability to work in a matrix environment and manage multiple projects.
* Strong relationship-building, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
* Technical degree in Science or Engineering.
Desirable:
* Industry experience managing IP.
* Risk assessment, freedom to operate, and landscape searching expertise.
