Overview
Apprentices will be working alongside fully qualified MET technicians to be fully trained in preparing and painting repaired panels. The role is to identify damaged mechanical and electrical components on a damaged car/light commercial vehicle and remove and refit these components before and after body repair work has been carried out.
Responsibilities
* Assessing a vehicle to establish the extent of damage.
* Removing and refitting non-structural body panels and mechanical and electrical systems.
* Removing and refitting any part relating to the vehicle to correct alignment.
* Removing, repairing and replacing engine, gearbox, suspension, mechanical and electrical systems.
* Diagnosing and fixing faults within a vehicle management system (onboard computer) and associated electrical system.
* Conducting pre-repair diagnostics sweeps, including disarming airbags and undertaking electrical safety precautions.
* Interpreting relevant technical data, specifications and methods to perform appropriate pre-preparation.
* Removing, repairing and replacing engine, gearbox, suspension, mechanical and electrical systems and related autonomous items such as Antilock Braking System units, safety restraint systems and RADAR & LIDAR components.
* Diagnosing and fixing faults within a vehicle management system and associated electrical system.
* Identifying and communicating supplementary parts where required.
* Identifying and operating the correct repair tools, equipment and devices, such as geometry wheel aligners, diagnostic hardware and torque wrenches to manufacturer specifications.
* Rebuilding vehicles post repair and reinstating safety-critical systems including safety restraint systems, airbags, seat belts, pretensions and advanced driver assistance systems.
Qualifications
* Certification in Refrigerant Handling (EC 842‑2006) or the most up‑to‑date revision.
* Attendance of an approved college on block release to work towards and achieve a Certificate at Level 3 in Vehicle Damage Mechanical Electrical and Trim (MET).
* A skills coach visits at least every 28 days as part of a close support network.
* Ability to undertake job preparation prior to commencing repair, i.e. disarming airbags, undertaking electrical safety precautions and conducting pre‑repair diagnostics sweeps.
* Ability to interpret technical data, specifications and methods for proper pre‑preparation.
* Ability to diagnose and fix faults within a vehicle management system and associated electrical system.
* Qualified in refrigerant handling and able to repair or replace air conditioning/climate control parts such as condensers, evaporator compressors and pumps.
* GCSE in English (grade 4 or above).
* GCSE in Maths (grade 4 or above).
* Strong communication skills.
* Excellent customer care skills.

* Team working skills.
