Join the small energetic Board of Swindon based charity, Phoenix Enterprises. We are passionate about improving the employability of people with mental health issues and learning disabilities. What difference will you make? As part of our board you will shape our work and strategic direction. Interviews with service users help trustees to fully understand our service. Through strategy development and planning you will help us maximise our reach and favourably influence our impact. Your contribution will help over 120 people each year with mental health issues and learning disabilities to learn life and employability skills, develop friendships and networks and gain confidence, which in turn improves their mental and physical health, their morale and wellbeing; ultimately improving their lives. For people with more severe challenges life can be limited to Phoenix and home. For many home is cramped, uninspiring and even dark. Phoenix gives a structure to their day and genuine work, building self-worth. Working here is a constructive alternative to being isolated at home; complementing the social or crafting alternatives. Many have been with us for >10 years and hugely value being part of our fun, caring community. We advocate for all, supporting with health, social care, housing issues, benefits, disputes etc. Our social activities encourage people to make friends and enjoy life. We help those with less severe issues gain skills and confidence to move into paid work. We help with CVs, job applications, interview skills – supporting people to live as independently as their condition allows. We tackle the stigma attached to mental health and learning disability, gradually raising awareness that they need not be a barrier to being an effective employee. What are we looking for? Trustees bring different skills, experiences and perspectives, all really important, ensuring a healthy approach and objective discourse. We are looking for two trustees, with the following skills Strategy development, planning and general management experience. A qualified accountant to oversee our budgets and advise on internal controls. Most importantly, we are looking for energy, enthusiasm and commitment. We welcome applications from people with lived experience of disability, mental health or unemployment, either personally or as carers and advocates. Applications for these trustee roles are invited from people who are based in or near to Swindon who would like to join our Board and have the capacity to be involved in our work. Trustees are expected to be able to attend the Board meetings and have the time to make an effective contribution to our work. Typically, there are 4 meetings per year. We value additional support, for example at meetings with key stakeholders such as grant assessors and Swindon Borough Council, interviewing service users for their feedback, or participating in social events. We are committed to reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve, particularly those with experience of living with mental health issues or disabilities. We look forward to hearing from people who can bring a new perspective and fresh ideas to inform our thinking. What will you be doing? We’re passionate in our mission to support people living with mental health issues and learning disabilities in Swindon. We are a small, friendly charity, with big impact. We are looking to recruit two trustees to join our Board, voluntary positions which offers so much. Whilst the positions are unpaid, you will feel the rewards of being part of a charity that is making a real difference. We are committed to our objective of building the employability skills of our service users. In the UK only 48% of people with mental health problems, and 17.6% of people with severe learning difficulties, are in employment, versus the national 75%. Mental health issues and learning disabilities can be financially debilitating and very isolating. In addition, those living with mental health problems often face complex and challenging issues ranging from wellbeing, managing the benefits system and finding accommodation. Good work and the right help make all the difference, and that’s what Phoenix is all about.
