Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join the Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC) team, part of Research Development and Innovation at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. MD-TEC is a research infrastructure, working alongside the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Devices, Digital and Robotics (NIHR HRC DDR), supporting the development and testing of novel pre-regulatory medical devices/technologies within the NHS and wider healthcare sector. The MD-TEC Team is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Project Research Officer with an interest in human factors to contribute both to the project management and scientific aspects of projects within the MD-TEC/ NIHR HRC DDR portfolio.

Working with companies especially small and medium enterprises (SME), MD-TEC supports companies through the complex regulatory process for medical devices by completing human factors usability testing, device functionality testing, health economic analyses, patient and public involvement work and first in human clinical investigations. The post holder will co-ordinate a number of these activities for multiple projects within the programme at the same time.


Main duties

The post holder will be a key member of the team and reporting to the Programme Manager/Project Manager. The role involves working independently, undertaking specific administrative and financial responsibilities, acquired through developed knowledge relating to medical device research processes. This post supports Senior NHS Clinicians and Academics and company partners to successfully apply for clinical research grants and deliver clinical and non-clinical device usability studies. Specifically this involves draft completion of complicated external funding applications for research studies; ensuring compliance with requirements for individual funding bodies and all relevant stakeholders. The post holder will be responsible for overall project management of studies including the planning, co-ordination and project delivery, including associated ethics and governance requirements. They will be expected to produce written reports/papers and presentations to communicate updates on study progress and findings.

The post holder must demonstrate excellent communication skills, which facilitate working in partnership with other teams within R D&I and wider UHB, but also with external organisations (e.g. University and commercial partners).

Person Specification

Qualifications

* Essential: GCSE in Maths and English (Grade C/4 or above)
* Essential: Relevant First Degree level in a science/healthcare related subject or equivalent
* Essential: Additional training plus relevant experience in the life sciences and medical sectors/ research environment
* Desirable: Understanding of medical technology development

Experience

* Essential: Experience of academic/scientific writing
* Essential: Experience of health related subject matter
* Essential: Understanding of University / NHS research environment
* Desirable: Understanding of issues relating to Research Governance
* Desirable: Understanding of biomedical research funders both in the UK, EU and the USA
* Desirable: Experience of working with industry and SMEs

* Written skills: Good report writing skills; Skills in using communication platforms - social media

* The post holder sometimes may be required to meet with staff out of normal office hours
* The post holder will be required to work and travel across all UHB sites as required
