Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer Contract Details Contract Type: Outside IR35 Day Rate: £390 - £420 per day Location: Macclesfield (remote with site travel as required) Duration: Initial 12-month contract with potential for extension Job Purpose The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design of mechanical systems and infrastructure within the water sector. This includes the preparation of feasibility, conceptual, and detailed designs in support of engineering and construction projects. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to produce high-quality design documentation in line with industry standards and client expectations. Key Responsibilities Deliver mechanical designs for feasibility, concept, and detailed stages. Prepare technical documents including: Mechanical Design Reports CDM Risk Registers Material Data Sheets and MTOs Pressure Test Calculations P&IDs, GA Drawings, and pipeline detail drawings Hazardous area and crossing detail drawings Create and amend design drawings using AutoCAD 2D/3D. Coordinate with internal teams and CAD technicians for integrated project delivery. Review outputs from other disciplines to ensure design compatibility. Prepare design packs for internal reviews and external client submissions. Ensure all work complies with relevant water industry standards, codes, and CDM 2015 regulations. Attend internal and external design review meetings. Raise risks, issues, or delays to the Design Manager in a timely manner. Support the creation of standard drawings/templates to improve efficiency across projects. Perform any other reasonable duties related to the role. Person Specification Education and Qualifications Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent discipline). Water sector design experience is essential. AutoCAD experience required; Civil 3D or similar tools desirable. Gas infrastructure design experience beneficial. Skills and Competencies Experience delivering mechanical designs in clean and/or wastewater projects across EPC phases. Proven knowledge of UK water network standards and specifications. Competent in designing pipeline layouts, pumping stations, and connection details. Excellent communication skills with both internal teams and external stakeholders. Strong written English and technical reporting ability. High attention to detail and ability to manage priorities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). Ability to work independently and within a team. Capable of managing smaller design projects. Motivated, proactive, and open to learning. Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.
