Lead Pharmacy Technician for Inpatient Clinical Services, QEH

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Pharmacy Clinical Services Team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Our Clinical Services team is made up of dedicated professionals who thrive on improving outcomes for our patients. This vacancy arises due to an internal promotion following the recent restructure of the Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician (MMPT) team. Our passion for developing and expanding the scope of MMPT roles has led to the creation of a new Lead Pharmacy Technician post, and we are now recruiting to maintain technician capacity and ensure continuity of care across inpatient services.


Main duties of the job

As a Lead Pharmacy Technician - Medicines Management, you will:

* Ensure the day-to-day delivery of a high-quality ward-based pharmacy service, covering both clinical and technical aspects.
* Provide supervision, mentoring, and line management to pharmacy technicians, assistants, and trainees.
* Support medicines reconciliation, discharge facilitation, and stock management across inpatient areas.
* Deputise for the Principal Pharmacy Technician - Clinical Services.
* Act as an Educational Supervisor and contribute to training and development programmes.
* Perform final accuracy checks on dispensed items in accordance with accreditation.

Job responsibilities

This Band 6 Pharmacy Technician post sits within the Clinical Services team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), part of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The vacancy has arisen following the internal appointment of the current postholder to a newly created Lead MMPT role a reflection of our ongoing commitment to developing and expanding the scope of Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician roles.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality ward-based pharmacy services, supporting medicines reconciliation, discharge facilitation, and stock management across inpatient areas. You will work closely with pharmacists, technicians, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centred medicines use.

Key Responsibilities:
* Provide day-to-day ward-based clinical and technical pharmacy services.
* Support medicines reconciliation, discharge planning, and stock control.
* Supervise and mentor junior pharmacy technicians and assistants.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of SOPs and best practice guidance.
* Participate in audits, service evaluations, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals regarding medicines-related queries.
* Uphold standards for safe and secure handling of medicines, including controlled drugs.
* Participate in weekend, late shift, and bank holiday rotas as required.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent
* Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* Specialist knowledge of pharmacy procedures/processes
* HEE LaSE Medicines Optimisation or in-house accreditation
* Educational supervisor or equivalent
* Other postgraduate qualifications relevant to pharmacy practice, such education & training qualifications


Experience & Skills

* Demonstrable experience and involvement with BTEC training of pre-registration pharmacy technicians.
* Demonstrate experience of training and mentoring others
* Demonstrate experience of line Management
* Demonstrable experience of co-ordinating and leading on clinical audit.
* Demonstrable experience of protocol l/ guideline development.


Knowledge & Skills

* Practical knowledge of role of ward-based pharmacy technicians in provision of medicines management services on wards
* Good understanding of law and good practice related to prescribing, storage and handling of pharmaceuticals
* Demonstrate clinical knowledge of medicines use
* Ability to prioritise and plan work effectively alone and for a team
* Demonstrated ability to communicate complex information effectively using clear written and spoken English and overcome barriers to understanding.
* Ability to work positively and calmly under pressure.
* Proficient in all Microsoft Office software with proven computer literacy and IT skills including: o Email o Word processing o Spreadsheets o Use of search engines/medical databases to retrieve information
* Demonstrated accurate numeric skills
* Ability to contribute to the planning of service developments within a department or service
* Evidence of audit and/or project work

* Be flexible in responding to demands of the service.
* Reliable, polite and approachable.
* Knows own professional and personal limitations and seeks advice where necessary.


Other

* Willingness to contribute to the general life and work of the Pharmacy and Trust.
* Willingness to participate in weekend, evening, Bank Holiday and late shifts as required.
* Able to work agreed hours
