Job Summary
We are looking to appoint a maternity cover Consultant in Renal Medicine. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, including nephrology, dialysis and transplant patients, in liaison with consultant colleagues. Ability to provide a sub–specialty service in keeping with department priority areas (transplantation, PD/home therapies) is desirable. The post holder must ensure continuity of care when absent and may represent the Directorate at a variety of corporate committees at the request of the Specialty Lead.
Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students
The post holder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, and may be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and advising on career development. In liaison with the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education the post holder may also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Study & Research
The post holder can request up to a maximum of 30 days study leave within a 3‑year period (pro rata for part‑time posts). The Trust supports Continuing Medical Education and requires fulfilment of Royal College and GMC revalidation requirements. Research opportunities exist and the post holder is encouraged to develop collaborative projects with other departments, the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. All research development plans with resource implications must be submitted to the Clinical Director before implementation.
Audit
The post holder will take part in a Clinical Audit Programme with support from the audit department and the Trust Clinical Audit Committee.
Qualifications and Registration
* Maintain full registration with the GMC.
* Must have CCT in Renal Medicine and have been entered on the GMC Renal Specialist Register at the time of appointment, or on the Renal Specialist Register via CESR, or be due to be awarded a CCT within 6 months of the interview date (Specialist registrars only).
Desirable
* Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS).
Training and Experience
* Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
* Minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience, including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent.
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of renal conditions and experience in the medical management of patients with kidney transplants.
* Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
Further Training, Management, Audit
* Evidence of recent CME and reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
* Experience in quality improvement methodology and completion of a QI project.
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues and the political context within which we operate.

* Proven teaching ability.
* Willingness to undertake teaching of medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
