Gardener – Gardens & Parkland Team. A fantastic opportunity has become available for a dedicated, skilled and detail-oriented Gardener to be part of the landscape and garden team on a prestigious private estate near Andover.
This opportunity would be ideal for a Gardener with a passion for horticulture and a strong work ethic. The Gardener will have the opportunity to contribute to the beauty and upkeep of the parkland and will be responsible for maintaining and caring for the grounds under the guidance of the Team Leader, who in turn reports to the Head Gardener.
The area maintained by the Garden and Parkland Team is the Front Park with a ha-ha and lake with cascading water, Arboretum, Lady’s Walk, Upper Park South and North, and Paddocks. Occasionally situations may arise that require the jobholder to perform other duties or tasks as may be requested by the Estate’s Management Team.
As Gardener for the Gardens & Parkland Team you will perform general garden care and maintenance to assist the Team Leader in planning and executing garden and parkland maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will be happy to use pedestrian ride on and tractor mounted grass cutting equipment to maintain a wide variety of amenity high quality lawns and grassland areas. They will perform regular watering, weeding, pruning, and fertilising of plants, monitor and control lawn pests and diseases across the Estate and maintain tools, machinery and equipment in good working condition. Plant, cultivate, and maintain lawns, wildflower areas, shrubs, trees, and other plants as well as assist in the implementation of landscaping projects are part of the role.
Attention to detail is important in the role and requires frequently inspecting all areas, including those not seen regularly, to ensure they are tidy and free of weeds, pay special attention to high-traffic areas in the garden and ensure that they are kept in pristine condition and respect the privacy of the estate’s residents and guests at all times.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other members of the garden team to ensure efficient operations and coverage of all tasks and communicate effectively with the Team Leader regarding any issues, supply needs, or maintenance concerns. They will assist in managing gardening supplies and equipment, ensuring that all items are stocked and in good working condition and report any maintenance or repair needs to your Team Leader promptly.
It is important the gardener ensures all their activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations and best practices and read and understand any risk assessments and follow / implement safety protocols as directed by the Team Leaders and Head Gardener.
Together, the team ensure that the owner, all residents, team members and visitors on the Estate enjoy a welcoming and well-maintained environment, regardless of the weather or any operational challenges that may arise.
The ideal candidate will have experience in amenity horticulture or groundsmanship, with practical expertise in lawn care or landscaping and a strong knowledge of turf care and maintenance techniques. Experience working with wildflower meadows is preferred. The role requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, supported by good communication skills and a professional demeanour.
Physical stamina and the ability to carry out manual labour are essential. Extensive machinery experience is required, with relevant certifications – such as chainsaw maintenance, tree felling, use of large ride-on and pedestrian lawn mowers, turf care machinery, and tractor operation – strongly preferred. PA1 and PA6a certifications are also advantageous. A certification in horticulture or groundsmanship, particularly related to lawn care, trees, or tree care, is a plus and an RHS Level 2 qualification or equivalent is also desirable. The candidate must hold a valid UK driver’s licence, demonstrate strong attention to detail, and be committed to maintaining high standards.
Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively are crucial. Trustworthiness, discretion, reliability, and honesty are key, along with a proactive, flexible, and adaptable attitude and a strong work ethic. A willingness to assist other teams across the Estate as needed is essential.
This position requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. The Gardener will work in various areas of the Estate and may be required to work flexible hours, including weekends, as needed of which time off in lieu will be given.
SALARY: £30,000 – £35,000 depending on experience
