Job overview

Critical Care at Worthing is a 12 bedded unit with 6 level 3 ITU beds and 6 level 2 HDU beds. We are a friendly team who focus on delivering excellent patient care, we have a practice educator who supports new starters with structured competencies to achieve learning.

The Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) is part of the multidisciplinary team delivering care to patients. Support and supervision is provided by a Registered Nurse.

The Health Care Support Worker carries out a range of personal care activities and tasks in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse.

Please note: This role does not meet the minimum criteria for visa sponsorship under the current UK immigration rules, which set specific salary and skill thresholds. As such, we are unable to provide sponsorship for this post. Applicants will therefore need to already have the right to work in the UK to be considered. We include this information at the outset to provide clarity and avoid unnecessary inconvenience for applicants.

If you do not meet the sponsorship requirements, and you are applying using a Graduate visa as your right to work, you must have a minimum of 18 months remaining on your visa at time of application.

Main duties of the job

·To assist patients to carry out personal care including meeting hygiene, nutrition and continence needs.

·To assist patient to mobilise where appropriate.

·Taking and recording of temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height and weight on instruction from the qualified nurse. Recording the results appropriately and reporting any abnormalities to the Nurse or Nurse in Charge.

·Testing specimens and recording the results.

·Under the supervision of the qualified nurse, support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their comfort and safety.

·To restock departmental areas as required reporting any shortages to the NiC/Ward Manager.

·To adhere to the policy for the Control of Infection.

·To maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business.

·To participate in quality assurance programmes as required.

·To participate in the promotion of a positive learning environment and to act as a role model at all times.

·To be aware of and contribute to Clinical Governance arrangements/issues for area of work.

You will be working with a friendly and experienced multidisciplinary team, providing patient centered and evidence-based care. You will be accountable for your own practice while supporting the registered nurse by caring for patients and delivering high standards of care.

Essential criteria

1. NHS experience or NHS primary care experience is required or an internationally educated nurse/midwife/doctor who has worked in an acute hospital setting within recent years
2. Care Certificate from a Ofqual regulated awarding organisation. OR international qualification e.g overseas nursing degree
3. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills acquisition, working at a higher-level standard of care delivery, equivalent to vocational qualification level 3. This is evidenced via a portfolio of practice and/or a professional discussion

Desirable criteria

4. Level 3 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support or Health and Social Care or relevant equivalent (or Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship standard in Clinical Healthcare Support, Health & Social Care or relevant equivalent qualification)
5. Maths GCSE (grade C or above or grade 4 to 9) or Maths Level 2 functional skills
6. English GCSE (grade C or above or grade 4 to 9) or English Level 2 Functional skills
