Lead Pharmacy Assistant – Antistatique (Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust)
Job Summary
The Lead Pharmacy Assistant supervises the pharmacy dispensary and pharmacy decentralised service, providing line management of pharmacy assistants. The role supports the Accuracy Checking Program (ACP), ensures smooth patient discharge, and delivers medicine‑management services to inpatients at Dorset County Hospital. The position requires excellent communication, flexibility, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Main Duties
• Supervise the dispensary team and pharmacy decentralized service.
• Participate in the Accuracy Checking Program (ACP).
• Ensure accurate final checking of medications and manage inventory for inpatient care.
• Provide medicines provision to ward teams and ensure quality dispensing services.
Responsibilities
* Supervise pharmacy assistants and manage pharmacy workflows.
* Final check medications through the Accuracy Checking Program.
* Deliver medicine management services to inpatients, ensuring medications are checked and supplied for discharge.
* Work on a rotating basis with weekend, bank holiday and late duties.
* Support the pharmacy team in providing high‑quality dispensing and ward‑level medicine provision.
* Maintain detailed records and comply with legal requirements for dispensing and controlled drugs.
Qualifications
Essentials
* Experience working in a busy hospital pharmacy department.
* Knowledge of the legal aspects of accuracy checking and prescription law.
* Good communication skills, both oral and written.
* Ability to work methodically, accurately and on own initiative.
* Computer literacy and familiarity with pharmacy computer systems.
* Capability to supervise, motivate and direct a team.
Desirables
* Experience with Accuracy Checking or similar programmes.
* Experience using the JAC or equivalent pharmacy computer system.
* Significant ward‑based working experience.
* Knowledge of medicines optimisation.
* Experience training staff within a pharmacy setting.
* Leadership experience and line management skills.
* Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedure reviews.
* Computer literacy and keyboard skills.
* Ability to work flexibly, including weekend and bank holiday duties.
Education, Qualifications & Training
* Level 3 qualification in pharmaceutical services or equivalent Level 2 with minimum 2 years of pharmacy experience; or working towards such qualification.
* Medicines Optimisation for Pharmacy Support Staff – Unit 1 (or working towards).
* Accuracy Checking qualification or working towards.
Contract & Salary
• Permanent, full‑time role (37.5 hrs per week)
• Salary: £27,485 to £30,162 per annum
• Rotational schedule with weekends, bank holidays and late duties
• Flexible working arrangements available
