Are you an experienced Gameplay Engineer who loves working with talented animation teams and creating solutions that help bring characters and creatures in games to life?
As a Senior Gameplay Engineer focused on animation in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, our new open-world survival crafting game developed in Unreal Engine 5, you will lead animation systems that animate characters, creatures, and combat.
This role combines gameplay and animation engineering. You will own systems like character movement, combat, spellcasting, emotes, and more, ensuring seamless gameplay integration and high-quality animation performance. Collaborating with animators, technical artists, and gameplay engineers, you will influence the player experience through expressive and responsive animation.
Responsibilities include:
Designing, implementing, and maintaining animation systems, including character movement, combat, spells, emotes, AIs, IKs, NPCs, etc.
Building tools and pipelines to support animation workflows, enhancing efficiency and data quality.
Partnering with animators to define best practices, automate processes, and enable creative iteration.
Writing clear, maintainable C++ code aligned with engineering standards and gameplay needs.
Supporting gameplay engineers with interfaces and architectural coordination.
Mentoring junior engineers through code reviews and knowledge sharing.
Identifying risks and opportunities in animation, proposing technical strategies.
Occasionally contributing to core gameplay features and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Supporting recruitment and hiring efforts.
What we’re looking for:
Extensive experience in animation programming, with a desire to become a subject matter expert.
Proven history of implementing complex gameplay and animation features in multiplayer games.
Strong understanding of game design principles and a passion for gaming.
Advanced C++ skills, with knowledge of C# or Python as well.
Experience with profiling and optimizing code.
Ability to design complex systems using appropriate patterns.
Familiarity with source control (Perforce).
Mentorship skills and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Ability to work independently and organize resources effectively.
Excellent communication skills for remote work environment.
Experience with UE4 or UE5 C++.
Familiarity with animation pipelines involving Maya or similar tools.
