How to become an electrical engineer
There are several routes to becoming an electrical engineer. You can complete a university or college course, or an apprenticeship. If you already have relevant skills or experience you may apply directly to an employer or train on‑the‑job.
* University/Graduate training scheme: Complete a degree in electrical or electronic engineering, or a related degree such as electromechanical or building services engineering. A Level 4 or 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) is also possible.
* College/training provider: Study for a Level 4 and 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
* Apprenticeship: An apprenticeship with a construction firm is a good way into the industry. It is available to anyone over the age of 16 and requires A levels or equivalent for a higher apprenticeship.
* Work experience: Relevant qualifications and experience in a related area can allow you to apply directly to an employer. Starting as an electrical engineering technician and gaining on‑the‑job training is common.
