Global Sector Research Manager
Border to Coast
Leeds (Hybrid)
Border to Coast is one of the largest asset pools in the UK and the largest asset manager outside of London and Edinburgh, responsible for c. £43bn across a range of asset classes (Public & Private) managed via both internal and external strategies. Authorised in 2018 through a collaboration of 11 Local Government Pension Funds with a total asset value of c.£60 billion (as at 31st of March 2023), Border to Coast is FCA-regulated, and is expected to continue its growth as it further supports its Partner Funds in making a difference for the Local Government Pension Scheme.
Our Partner Funds are responsible for paying the pensions of more than one million members, employed by over 2,800 local employers, who provide services to millions of local taxpayers. As a customer-owned, customer-focussed organisation, we’ve developed a reputation as long-term, responsible and innovative investors and have already delivered over £70m in savings and are on track to deliver over £367m in our first decade of operation. Following the Mansion House reforms announced by the Chancellor in July 2023 this is an exciting time to be part of pension pooling.
Global Sector Research Manager
Due to internal promotions and team expansion, we are currently looking to make a key leadership hire within our Research function. As Research Manager, you will be responsible for producing high-quality research material to support Portfolio Managers with stock selection and portfolio construction across six regional equity portfolios and manage Research Analysts in the team covering global equities.
This will involve the preparation and maintenance of written research using internal and external sources of data and research to meet due diligence requirements and support portfolio construction through the inclusion of new holdings and the reduction/removal of existing holdings, all whilst ensuring you are acting in accordance with the Border to Coast investment process, procedures, and necessary regulatory requirements.
Working closely with Portfolio Managers across the Equity Function, you will be an active participant in investment team meetings, engage frequently with management teams of both potential and existing holdings, and consistently seek to evaluate new investment opportunities within global sectors under coverage.
This role will have line management responsibility for Research Analysts within the function. You will be highly active in mentoring, developing and enhancing their research capabilities and ensuring that the core values of Border to Coast and ESG considerations are embedded within their analysis, whilst also helping them to realise their career growth and long term ambitions.
The successful candidate will need to balance a keen interest in both leading and developing others, along with producing high quality investment research. Specifically:
* A proven track record of conducting investment research and bottom-up fundamental equity analysis.
* Expertise within the Financials sector or an interest in applying existing expertise to global sector coverage of this area.
* Ability to create and communicate high quality written investment theses supported by comprehensive financial analysis.
* Keen interest in, and understanding of, investment markets, as well as an investment approach that is underpinned by a focus on identifying and maintaining long-term, quality holdings, and a commitment to responsible investment and sustainability.
* Previous experience of, or the ability to, lead, inspire, mentor and develop Research Analysts and hold direct line management responsibility.
* Ability to satisfy regulatory requirements and comply with FCA Conduct Rules and Nolan Principles.
Ultimately Border to Coast is an investment business and its success is determined by the investment performance we generate for our Partner funds. Fundamental to that investment performance is our research capability which underpins and guides all aspects of our long-term investment strategy. This is a fantastic opportunity for a Research Manager to come into a growing and progressive Asset Manager, with significant AUM, where they can have a profound and long-term impact on not just the continued success of the organisation but also the career development and futures of Research Analysts within the wider Research Function.
We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. We have an open and supportive culture with a commitment to learning and valuing everyone’s skills and contribution.
