The postholder will play a key role in delivering and networking orthopaedic services across Lancashire, working collaboratively with regional partners to support the development of cohesive, high‑quality trauma and orthopaedic care. The successful applicant will complement the existing team of established consultants and work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) within the Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate.
Responsibilities
* Undertake elective theatre sessions at both Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital, with trauma theatre sessions based at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
* Conduct weekly fracture and elective outpatient clinics at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, collaborating with the Paediatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP), Physiotherapy and Orthotics teams to deliver patient‑centred care.
* Take responsibility for the training, supervision and professional development of junior medical staff, including supervision within outpatient clinics and theatre sessions.
* Actively contribute to service development within the Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate.
* Participate fully in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities, supporting the ongoing development and assurance of safe, personal, effective and high‑quality services.
Essential qualifications
* Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practise.
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register or admission within 6 months.
* FRCS (Tr+Orth) or equivalent accreditation.
Desirable qualifications and preferences
* Evidence of recent publications or research.
* Higher degree or recognised higher professional training.
* Sub‑specialty interest in lower limb arthroplasty.
* Training in general trauma surgery (Adult & Paediatric).
* Fellowship training.
* ATLS certification.
* Specialist Registrar or equivalent grade experience in Orthopaedic surgery leading to CCT or equivalent.
* Demonstrated teaching to junior staff and non‑medical staff.
* Ability to fully integrate within the Orthopaedic unit and develop a specialist interest that complements existing skills.
* Excellent communication and motivational skills with colleagues.
* Evidence of good teamwork.
* Leadership ability.
* Evidence of attendance on a managerial course.
* Involvement in management or administration.
* Previous evidence of leadership roles.
* Proven track record in education at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Evidence of quality improvement projects.
* Willingness to reside within 10 miles (30 minutes drive) of Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
* Access to private transport.
* Availability to attend on‑call periods as required.
