OUT in Leeds (LGBTQ+) Group Support (x2)
Location: Leeds city centre
Hours: 2.5 per week — Tuesdays, 6:30pm–9pm
Contract: Fixed-term until July 2028 (3 years)
Salary: £12.21 per hour
About Us
People in Action (Yorkshire) has been supporting learning-disabled and autistic adults in Leeds since 1983. We believe in inclusion, empowerment, and person-centred support, helping people live fulfilling lives and build meaningful connections.
We’re excited to relaunch our OUT in Leeds LGBTQ+ group and are looking for enthusiastic Group Support Workers to help make it a success.
About the LGBTQ+ Project
The ‘Out in Leeds’ group ran from 2018 to April 2024 and filled a crucial gap in provision. The closure left many people without appropriate support.
This new project aims to restore this vital support network and address stigma, promote healthy relationships, and support inclusion and wellbeing.
The weekly group will be delivered by a team of 3 staff members. One Group Leader and two Group Support Workers. The group will follow a varied programme of social and educational activities based in Leeds city centre and developed in consultation with members.
The Role
As a Group Support Worker, you will support the Group Leader to deliver inclusive, accessible sessions, ensuring all members feel valued, engaged, and safe.
Key responsibilities include:
* Supporting the delivery of a 12-week programme developed with members.
* Helping members participate fully, build friendships, and achieve personal outcomes.
* Assisting with practical tasks during sessions, including set-up, attendance records, and monitoring.
* Following risk assessments and safeguarding procedures to ensure member safety.
* Communicating inclusively with members, carers, and colleagues.
* Leading sessions when the Group Leader is absent and supporting online sessions if required.
* Contributing to fundraising, promotion, and feedback collection to support project sustainability.
Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for two group support workers who are caring, reliable, and enthusiastic, with experience supporting learning disabled and autistic people. You may also have lived experience of LGBTQ+ communities.
We’d love to hear from people who:
* At least 6 months’ experience supporting autistic people and/or people with learning
* Understand LGBTQ+ issues, barriers, and inclusivity.
* Can communicate effectively with a diverse range of members.
* Respect dignity, privacy, and choice in all interactions.
* Can follow safeguarding and risk assessment procedures.
* Are flexible and enjoy working as part of a small, supportive team.
Our Values
We’re looking for someone who shares our core values: Person-Centred – Inclusive – Empowering – Quality
This is a highly rewarding opportunity to lead a small but impactful project that makes a real difference. If you’re passionate about visibility, safety, and inclusion for learning disabled or autistic LGBTQ+ people, we’d love to hear from you.
Our Commitment to Race Equality:
We acknowledge the existence of institutional racism and are committed to challenging inequality. We actively work to remove barriers and practices that contribute to systemic injustice. People in Action operates a zero-tolerance policy toward racism.
