Overview
Registered Nurses and/or Operating Department Practitioners are invited to join the Cardiac theatre team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The elective program runs Monday to Friday with 24/7 emergency cover. Four theatres are dedicated to cardiac surgery (three adult and one congenital adult and paediatric theatre). The role offers experience in congenital heart conditions, multiple valve and complex aortic surgery, with access to educational programs and opportunities for career advancement.

Job Description
Job responsibilities
* Provide skilled specialist assistance in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care throughout the Operating Department.
* Participate as an integral member of the theatre Scrub team, covering early, late, night and weekend shifts.
* Act as patient advocate and maintain high standards of patient care in line with NMC or HCPC codes of conduct.
* Support and mentor students and new staff as appropriate.
What we are looking for
* Theatre scrub experience is essential; cardiac scrub experience is desirable.
* Enthusiastic and focused individual to join a multi-cultural and diverse cardiac theatre team.
* Full-time position of 37.5 hours over four days per week with a commitment to night and weekend work.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Essential: Registered nurse or ODP on relevant part of the register.
* Degree or equivalent experience.
* Ability to assist in transferring a patient through the intraoperative phase of perioperative care with concise, accurate handover.
* Knowledge to support learners in practice and promote evidence-based practice.
* Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service; understanding of personal accountability.
* Aptitude for caring for anaesthetised and/or acutely unwell patients.
Desirable
* Experience of teaching and supporting learners in practice.
* Relevant resuscitation qualification (e.g., Immediate Life Support).
* Experience of working within relevant care settings.
* Specialist theatre work-based learning or mentorship course post-qualification.
* Interest in research to promote good practice.
