Job Summary
The nurse extern works closely with our professional healthcare team to deliver compassionate patient-centered care. Under the supervision of a registered nurse preceptor, the extern develops confidence in critical thinking and clinical skills essential for a nursing career. The role emphasizes developing clinical judgment and problem-solving techniques based on established Standards of Care, the Nurse Practice Act, and Methodist Hospitals' mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Functions)
1. Perform basic patient care tasks such as measuring vital signs, recording intake and output, assisting with mobility, nutrition, hygiene, comfort, infection prevention, and patient safety interventions.
2. Assist in therapeutic procedures as needed.
3. Contribute to the interdisciplinary care plan under the supervision of a registered nurse preceptor.
4. Provide education to patients and families regarding care plans.
5. Document all patient care activities accurately in the Electronic Medical Record following Methodist policy.
6. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Good interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
* Diplomatic interaction with patients, families, visitors, and staff.
* Flexibility to meet unanticipated demands.
* Ability to maintain composure in crises.
* Use the nursing process to approach problems as a nurse extern.
Education
* Enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing with good academic standing or a Nurse Graduate preparing for NCLEX.
* Completed Fundamentals/Foundations of Nursing coursework and labs if currently enrolled.
* Proof of current school registration or graduation required.
Experience
Certifications and Licensures
* Current BLS certification is required.
* Nurse Graduates must obtain Indiana licensure within 60 days of graduation.
