About The Role
Reporting to the Project Lead, you will lead the cataloguing strand of a major digitisation project focused on SOAS Library’s rare books and manuscript collections. You will play an active role in cataloguing, contributing directly to the creation of high-quality metadata. In addition, you will manage a team of cataloguers, ensuring that all outputs adhere to international standards such as DCRM(B), MARC, and RDA. You will be responsible for developing and refining cataloguing workflows, implementing quality control procedures, and maintaining clear documentation to support project delivery. You will also collaborate with colleagues in conservation, imaging, and Special Collections to ensure effective coordination across all phases of the project.
About The Department
SOAS Library is one of the world's most important academic libraries for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The Library attracts scholars from all over the world to consult its holdings and further their research. The Library houses over 1.3 million volumes at the SOAS campus at Russell Square in central London, together with a major collection of archives, manuscripts, rare books, an expanding Digital Library, 500 art objects (including a manual handling collection) and a growing network of electronic resources.
This role will work with Library teams, including Special Collections, Collections Care and the Digitisation Centre to deliver a large-scale digitisation project drawing on material from SOAS Library’s archives and special collections.
About You
* Strong knowledge of cataloguing standards including MARC, RDA, and DCRM(B)
* Experience cataloguing rare books, manuscripts, or archival materials in a research library setting
* Experience contributing to or managing cataloguing components of digitisation projects
* Familiarity with copyright and intellectual property issues in a library context
* Experience using library management systems such as OCLC WorldShare
* High attention to detail and commitment to metadata accuracy and consistency
* Ability to develop documentation and guidelines to support team performance
* A proactive, problem-solving approach to improving cataloguing processes
* A postgraduate qualification in Library or Information Science, or equivalent experience
