Job Overview
The Environmental Services Officer is a self‑motivated member of the workforce who ensures that day‑to‑day handling and disposal of waste complies with approved practices across Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post covers any shift in the integrated waste team, including manual sweeping of hospital grounds, streets, alleys and other areas.
Key Responsibilities
* Collect all hospital waste and laundry in accordance with the schedules set by the Environmental Services Supervisor.
* Segregate, transport and process specific categories of waste as dictated by the Trust's “Policy for the Management of Waste”.
* Operate the Trust's electric vehicles and bulk waste compaction machines.
* Ensure that all aspects of the Waste Permit Conditions are adhered to.
* Place specific categories of waste in the appropriate skip for off‑site disposal or recycling, as indicated by the Environmental Services Supervisor.
* Clean bulk waste storage areas and waste containers as scheduled by the Environmental Services Supervisor.
* Carry out external environmental duties, including collection of litter, emptying of bins and manual sweeping of hospital grounds.
* Inspect all mobile equipment used to ensure compliance and safety.
* Follow incident reporting procedures for accidents occurring during environmental activities.
* Operate water‑jet wash to clean walkways and loading bays.
* Carry out any other duties appropriate to the role that may be delegated.
Qualifications and Requirements
* GCSE or other qualification or equivalent.
* Desirable: Environmental qualifications.
* Full UK driver’s licence.
* Experience in waste management or handling activities.
* Experience operating electric vehicles or other plant.
* Good verbal communication skills.
* Willingness to learn and develop.
* Flexibility with working patterns.
* Ability to work safely around vulnerable people.
* Disclosed DBS and disclosure under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (as required).
