Preston Microbiology Services at Royal Preston Hospital is looking for a senior Biomedical Scientist (SBMS) to work in clinical microbiology.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified HCPC Biomedical Scientists (Microbiology) to join our clinical microbiology team. You will be expected to have extensive practical post registration experience of working in a clinical microbiology department and can provide evidence supporting this. This senior role will involve assisting the lead BMS’s in the running of the department, assisting with training, supervision of staff, reviewing of technical procedures, monitoring of EQA/QC/IQA and maintenance of UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189 standards.
The successful candidate should be well motivated, have proven technical and communication skills, extensive clinical microbiology knowledge and a strong interest in further developing their career.
The microbiology department has UKAS 15189:2022 accreditation and processes approximately 500,000 tests per year. Equipment includes, Virtuo blood culture system, Maldi-TOF, Vitek 2, Cepheid Gene Xpert, UF5000 analyser, Cobas 5800, Cobas 601 to be upgraded to 801, easy mag, Vidas and liaison analysers.
The department is accredited for training of BMS staff and is approved for the training of medical microbiologists.

Service Delivery
·To liaise and co-work with other team leaders to ensure efficient delivery of the service.
·To direct staff regarding technical and work issues.
·Discussion of test problems and possible solutions with the Lead BMS, and to relay solutions to other members of staff
·Dealing with telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians, healthcare practitioners, giving technical advice on results and use of the service.
·Liaise by telephone with engineers for analytical equipment to facilitate fault diagnosis and repair or replacement of parts to enable continuation of service if possible without engineers visit.
·Regularly meet with section staff to discuss current departmental and section issues
·Responsible for Inventory management within the section to ensure efficient operation and continuity of service, ensure replenishment of stocks.
·Assist in the selection of new and replacement equipment

You will be required to join the out of hours on-call service to provide emergency work.
You will be expected to work 37.5 hours flexibly between 8.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. Monday – Friday and 8.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m. Saturday, Sundays and rostered Bank Holidays.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
1. Biomedical sciences (hons) degree or equivalent qualification
2. HCPC registration
3. Specialist portfolio in clinical Microbiology (or equivalent)
4. MSc in Clinical Microbiology or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
5. Management Qualification

7. Quality Qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
8. Highly developed technical and scientific skills in clinical microbiology
9. Experience as a microbiology specialist in a clinical microbiology laboratory
10. Experience of troubleshooting analytical and technical problems
11. Detailed understanding of quality assurance
12. Good knowledge of health and safety regulations and risk assessments
13. Evidence of highly developed written and oral communication skills in a variety of settings.
14. Full understanding and experience of clinical microbiology accreditation requirements to ISO 15189 standard
