Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Ophthalmic Photographer to join our friendly and dedicated Ophthalmology team at Warrington Hospital, on a fixed term 12 month maternity leave vacancy. Working 30 hours per week, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality diagnostic imaging to support the assessment, treatment, and monitoring of patients with a wide range of ocular conditions. Training and support will be provided for the right candidate.


Main duties of the job

You will work with our multidisciplinary team—including consultants, optometrists, orthoptists, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff. You will be responsible for capturing accurate and reliable ophthalmic images using a variety of specialist equipment. This includes retinal photography, OCT scanning, visual fields, and other imaging modalities used within our busy Eye Unit. You will ensure that imaging is undertaken to the highest clinical standards, following departmental protocols and maintaining excellent attention to detail. The role also involves supporting clinicians by providing accurate, timely images for diagnosis and treatment planning, contributing to smooth patient flow, and ensuring a positive patient experience.

Job responsibilities

* To communicate effectively with patients and carers to explain complex imaging procedures and gain consent, including for those with severe visual impairment
* To instil appropriate eye drops following approved protocols to ensure patient safety
* To provide a specialized colour fundus imaging service including high magnification, stereo imaging and wide-field protocols
* To provide an anterior segment imaging service
* To undertake OCT imaging on patients of all ages and abilities, ensuring the best possible result
* To provide a full retinal and choroidal angiography service (fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography) for a wide range of eye conditions, with allowances for variations required in examination by ophthalmic condition
* To ensure that all images are of sufficient quality to inform diagnosis and treatment decisions
* To understand and follow emergency procedures in the event of an adverse reaction from a patient
* To perform visual acuity testing using a variety of methods as necessary
* To recognise and report to medical staff any findings which may influence a medical decision which have not previously been noted
* To be accountable for maintaining accurate paper and electronic records
* To have day-to-day responsibility for imaging equipment, reporting faults and facilitating maintenance as required
* To maintain a working knowledge of new developments in ophthalmic imaging
* To manage own caseload of ophthalmic imaging patients within the clinic
* To undertake a range of clinical investigations as required (visual field examination, intraocular pressure measurement, visual acuity testing, etc.)


Administrative and managerial

* Prioritise own workload
* Supervise and work with optometry/ophthalmology technicians, providing assistance on imaging techniques as required
* Work with department lead to develop imaging service
* Liaise with senior staff in ophthalmology, IT and medical engineering regarding updates or replacement of imaging equipment as required


Audit and Teaching

* Train technicians and those undertaking ophthalmic imaging in necessary techniques
* Teach students of all disciplines regarding ophthalmic imaging
* Take a proactive lead in professional development identifying areas for personal and service development


Professional

* Maintain own professional (AHCS) registration and participate in necessary CPD
