Job overview
The History Department seeks an enthusiastic, well-qualified graduate to teach History across the age range with immediate start
Applications are invited from NQTs and experienced teachers in the independent and maintained sectors. A willingness to become involved with sports teams/extra-curricular activities and trips would be an advantage.
The History Department has been very successful over a long period of time. At present, there are five principal members of staff but when combined with Politics specialists, we share an office for seven teachers.
In the Lower School, ages 11-14, the course is based loosely on the National Curriculum but we teach a variety of content with modules on The Crusades, Revolutions and Slavery in Key Stage 3. In the Third Year (Year 9) we teach one of the IGCSE units (German Depth Study from the Cambridge IGCSE th Century specification before the options process begins. There is usually a good uptake with at least four classes in the Fourth and Fifth Year. Those students attaining an 9-7 grade has averaged 80% over the past three years.
In the Sixth Form there are currently six History classes; all History groups are taught the AQA specification with our current units being The British Empire c and The American Dream with Nineteenth Century Germany taught as the Coursework element. Results are well above national averages with 60% of students attaining an A*-A grade between and many of our students go on to pursue History at degree level with some successfully applying to elite universities in the last three years.
We run numerous trips with the Sixth Form travelling to America, IGCSE students have the opportunity to travel to Berlin and Key Stage 3 years visiting the Battlefields, enjoying a performance of Hamilton in the West End or a day at Windsor Castle. The Department also runs a highly successful lecture programme with visiting speakers coming to the College or more recently historians lecturing online.
The Department is very fortunate to teach in a beautiful Humanities Block which has five well-equipped teaching classrooms and a spacious office. We have enjoyed embracing the recent iPad led teaching 'revolution' across all year groups. The Department has created a friendly culture of creativity and sharing alongside a determination to ensure the students are the best version of themselves

Academics
There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.
The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.
staff and induction
There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George's from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.
All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.
