Head of Legal and Excellence

Location- Liverpool office based with hybrid and flexible working practices, balancing working from home with time collaborating and socialising with colleagues in our modern offices.

As Head of Legal and Excellence, you’ll lead from the front, embedding excellence and strong governance across Medical Law Services while playing a central role in senior strategic decision‑making. Blending high‑level leadership with deep clinical negligence expertise, you’ll directly influence how cases are accepted, progressed, and delivered across the business and can make a real impact — combining strategic influence with hands‑on legal leadership in a business that values excellence, integrity, and progression.

1. Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm

Main Responsibilities:

Legal Leadership and Team Management

14. Lead and manage the operational performance and development of the case vetting, Education and legal support teams.
15. Ensure accurate, consistent and timely vetting decisions as well as ensuring high quality legal input and case progression support.
16. Develop and implement the organisation’s Excellence and Standards strategy aligned MLS objectives.
17. Champion a culture of accountability, quality, and high performance across all business functions
18. Lead, manage, and develop the teams to ensure safe, effective, and consistent practice.
19. Provide clear direction, performance oversight, and professional supervision.

Excellence and Standards

20. Establish and monitor standards aligned with organisational policies and regulatory requirements working with HoD Compliance.
21. Ensure timely and accurate processing of referrals/leads in line with service level agreements.
22. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service quality and outcomes.

Quality Assurance and Improvement

23. Establish performance standards and KPIs.
24. Work with the HoD Operations to drive continuous improvement methodologies and organisational learning.
25. Ensure consistent service standards across all departments.

Leadership and Stakeholder Management

26. Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the Managing Director, offering expert guidance on departmental performance, operational excellence, and targeted improvement initiatives.
27. Lead and develop a high-performing Excellence and Standards team.
28. Influence senior stakeholders and cross-functional leaders to achieve compliance and quality objectives.
29. Act as a key liaison with group partners.
30. Foster collaborative relationships across departments to embed standards and best practice.

Essential Skills and Experience:

Essential Experience

31. Significant experience in leadership or team management.
32. Medico legal experience.
33. Experience working within governance, compliance, or regulatory frameworks.
34. Demonstrable experience providing guidance on legal or professional standards in healthcare.

Essential Knowledge

35. In-depth understanding of relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks.
36. Understanding of policy development, internal controls, and assurance frameworks.

Skills and Competencies

37. Strategic thinker with strong analytical capability.
38. Excellent leadership and people management skills.
39. Ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory information and translate it into practical guidance.
40. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
41. High levels of integrity, judgement, and professional credibility.
