PROJECT ENGINEER (ELECTRICAL)

Based in the beautiful Scottish Borders (circa 1 hour south of Edinburgh), GRW Talent's client is a well-established global manufacturer providing solutions to the power, telecom and data centre markets. They have two sites in Scotland and form part of an international business stretching into Europe, the USA and Middle-East. The group is undergoing extensive growth and change right now, and they are currently looking to recruit a Project Engineer with an electrical bias.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, in this role of Project Engineer (Electrical) you will be responsible for planning, executing, and finalising projects according to strict deadlines, budgets, and quality standards. This includes coordinating cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project delivery, while adhering to safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and organisational values.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Planning & Management - develop comprehensive project plans, including scope definition, objectives, timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
Oversee basic electrical design aspects of projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards (e.g., BS7671, IEC, NEC)
Collaborate with design teams and consultants to produce accurate drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
Technical Support to Maintenance - provide electrical guidance and troubleshooting support to maintenance engineers for complex issues.
Share best practices and facilitate knowledge transfer to strengthen the overall technical capability of the maintenance team.
Budget & Cost Control - prepare & manage project budgets, tracking expenditures & variances, providing regular financial updates & forecasts, identifying cost-savings
Cross-Functional Coordination - liaise with Maintenance, Production, Procurement & Quality.
Plan, coordinate, and oversee the installation, relocation, or modification of production lines.
Ensure all changes to production lines meet safety standards, electrical requirements, and production efficiency goals.
Project Execution & Supervision - oversee on-site installation and commissioning of electrical equipment, ensuring work is done safely, to spec, and within schedule. Experience:
Proven track record in electrical project engineering, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
Experience in project planning, budget management, and stakeholder coordination.
Familiarity with electrical regulations and standards (e.g., BS7671, IEC, Low Voltage Directive, EMC directive) and relevant installation best practices.
Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documents.
Basic understanding of electrical systems design, installation, testing, and commissioning.
Exposure to automation and control systems (e.g., PLCs, SCADA) is an advantage.
Solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations, particularly concerning electrical systems.
Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and professional development. Ideally you will have an HNC (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related field or be a Time Served Engineer through a recognised apprenticeship (Electrical discipline). additional certifications in Project Management (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP) or Health & Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) are also desirable. You should be proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Project (or equivalent project management tools) and have a familiarity with AutoCAD or similar CAD software to review and mark up electrical drawings. Lastly experience with ERP or CMMS systems (e.g., SAP S/4HANA, FIIX) for project tracking and resource planning would also be beneficial. This role is suited to someone with excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
