Stores Operator – MAT Cover

Contract Type: Fixed‑term (Maternity Cover)
Overview
This role is a maternity cover position within the Stores function at Barnstone. The Stores Operator oversees day‑to‑day warehouse and stores operations, ensuring accurate inventory management, coordinating the receipt of materials, and maintaining appropriate stock levels to support business operations. The role supports Maintenance and Production teams while maintaining strong working relationships with suppliers and ensuring all activities are carried out safely, compliantly, and efficiently during the MAT cover period.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
* Health, Safety & Environment:
Ensure a safe working environment in line with Safe Working Practices (SWP), STOP assessments and company procedures. Lead by example in maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance. Manage COSHH compliance, maintain an up‑to‑date register, safety data sheets and correct storage, labelling and segregation of hazardous substances. Support HAVS monitoring and reporting. Ensure waste materials are segregated, handled and removed from site in line with company and environmental regulations.
* Stores & Inventory Management:
Manage daily stores operations, including ordering stock for the works team and maintaining accurate stock levels within SAP. Achieve inventory performance targets, material availability and purchasing savings goals. Coordinate receipt of incoming materials and verify against purchase orders. Accurately record all goods issued within the inventory system in a timely manner. Support annual stocktakes and report discrepancies. Resolve inventory queries, including new stock records, minimum order levels, bin locations, and material amendments. Manage and action obsolete items in line with company procedures. Maintain excellent housekeeping standards, including organisation, labelling, cleanliness and location accuracy.
* Commercial & Supplier Management:
Ensure commercial agreements with suppliers are adhered to and enhanced where possible. Resolve supplier queries relating to routine orders and record issues via supplier performance reporting systems. Match supplier invoices against purchase orders and goods received notes for accurate receipting and on‑time payment. Collate and enter P‑Card / T‑Card information and manage invoicing for the Stores P‑Card.
* Operational Support:
Liaise closely with Maintenance and Production teams to ensure consumables, spares and critical stock items are available. Coordinate plant and equipment hire with site management. Arrange servicing and maintenance of plant spares and equipment. Conduct monthly inspections of first aid and spill kits to ensure compliance and readiness. Order, issue and manage site PPE, including vending machine stock, washing and face‑fit testing requirements.
Qualifications, Experience, Skills & Knowledge
* Good general standard of education.
* Essential: Experience in administration and strong IT skills (MS Office, SAP).
* Preferred: Stores / warehouse experience, experience within continuous‑process or heavy industry environments, forklift licence.
* Strong health, safety and environmental awareness.
* Excellent IT skills (SAP and Microsoft Office).
* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Highly organised with the ability to prioritise effectively.
* Strong problem‑solving capability.
* High attention to detail and accuracy.
* Confident decision‑making ability.
