Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a new permanent Thoracic Consultant Surgeon position. This role supports the expanding thoracic surgical service in a tertiary unit.
Key Responsibilities
* Full participation in the thoracic surgery service and provision of expertise and support to other specialists as required.
* Operating lists (VATS expertise is essential).
* Multi‑disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
* Outpatient clinics, including peripheral virtual clinics.
* Ward rounds.
* Medical audit and education, consultant appraisal for revalidation, and participation in medical education.
* Covering colleague absences and supporting on‑call rota (1 in 7).
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement.
* Extensive experience in advanced minimal invasive technique; VATS required.
Desirable
* Higher research degree (MD/PhD).
* Specialist Register.
* Previous consulting‑level thoracic surgery experience.
* Experience managing thoracic trauma patients.
* Interest in lung volume reduction procedures.
* Previous robotic surgery experience.
* Research interest.
Aptitudes & Skills
* Evidence of working effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
* Understanding of equality and diversity.
* Excellent verbal and written communication in English.
* Organisational and prioritisation skills, meeting deadlines.
* Calm, compassionate, and responsive under rapidly changing circumstances.
* Evidence of participation in teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate).
