The Opportunity
Our public sector client is seeking an experienced and motivated Scientific Officer (Landfill) to join their environmental protection team based in Belfast. This is a key technical role contributing to the monitoring and protection of land, water and air quality at a large, complex former landfill site.

Key Responsibilities
1. Lead and implement groundwater, surface water, leachate, and landfill gas monitoring programmes at a major former landfill site.
2. Analyse scientific data, write interpretive reports, and maintain accurate digital records.
3. Operate and maintain scientific monitoring equipment and ensure calibration and data integrity.
4. Liaise with regulatory bodies, consultants, and internal teams on environmental matters.
5. Assist in pollution investigations and support air quality monitoring efforts.
6. Supervise staff or contractors and provide technical training where required.
7. Contribute to environmental compliance, public health protection, and operational efficiency.
Essential Criteria
8. A third-level qualification in a science-related subject (e.g. Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering) and a minimum of 1 year relevant experience
OR
At least 2 years relevant experience in environmental water sampling and landfill gas management without a formal qualification.
9. Full, current driving licence (valid in Northern Ireland) and access to transport.
10. Experience in environmental monitoring within landfill or similar industrial environments.
Desirable Criteria (Shortlisting Purposes)
11. Minimum 2-3 years' relevant experience (depending on qualifications).
12. Demonstrable ability to plan and deliver environmental surveys or monitoring programmes under regulatory frameworks.

13. Strong technical understanding of landfill gas and water monitoring techniques.
14. Excellent written and verbal communication.
15. IT literacy including use of GIS, data loggers, databases and reporting tools.
16. Team working and leadership skills in operational and field environments.
17. Strong health and safety awareness.
