An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly Pre-Op Assessment Department working across Kettering General, Nene Park & Corby Outpatients.

Our Working hours are 08.00-18.00 Monday – Friday.

Pre-Assessment are looking for a highly motivated Healthcare Assistant who is looking for a new challenge to develop and gain new skills in a supported environment. This HCA role is varied and interesting as every day will be different. If you have Venepuncture and ECG skills, can work independently, are interested in contributing to the patients' care by carrying out telephone follow-up clinics and work alongside our Anesthetists in the high risk clinics, then this could be the role for you.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and a commitment to maintaining high standards of care. A friendly and patient-centred approach is vital for this role. It is also important that the applicant has a calming demeanor as most patients are quite anxious, nervous coming into hospital pre surgery.

To assist in the provision of the Pre-Assessment service and contribute to the effective running of the Outpatients Department by concentrating on tasks that directly support and assist the patient, under the supervision of trained nurses. This will include stock management, routine observations, taking ECGs, Venepuncture and reporting any abnormal results to the trained nurses and prioritising patients as required. Other service delivery responsibilities include supporting the Anaesthetists in the high risk clinics and undertake follow up telephone clinics.

You will be required to be highly motivated individual who is able to work under pressure to provide a high standard of care.

Person specification


Qualifications

* Educated to Vocational Qualification/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent level of education, training or experience
* Holds National Care Certificate or equivalent level of education, training or experience (e.g. able to demonstrate the skill and competency to undertake the clinical duties as described in the job description)
* Holds Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English or education equivalent
* Speciality specific training and competencies achieved and ongoing development


Knowledge and Experience

* Experience working in as a Healthcare Assistant in an healthcare, social care organisation/setting or service industry requiring people contact
* Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control and Safeguarding processes
* Experience of working in a healthcare team and patient settings
* Competent to perform ECG and Venepuncture
* Experience of dealing with patient/relative verbal complaints


Skills

* Good communication and listening skills (written and verbal)
* Able to work on own initiative, following direction/close supervision by a Registered Practitioner
* Able to work as a team
* Able to relate well with patients, relatives, visitors, colleagues, the multi-disciplinary team and wider Trust colleagues
* Taking and recording Vital Signs and other clinical skills with evidence of appropriate training within scope of job role
* Computer/keyboard skills for entering/updating patient records

If you need to have a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check, as a requirement of the role, you will be required to repay the cost of obtaining a DBS check (£49.50) and this amount will be reclaimed from your first salary. From 1st February 2019 all new starters to the Trust are required to join the DBS update service as per Trust DBS Re-checking Policy which has an annual cost of £16. New employees who do not join the update service will be required to pay £49.50 for a new DBS check in 3 years time.

Please note that news starters with KGH are subject to a six month probationary period.
