Consultant Anaesthetist

We are inviting candidates to be part of our Anaesthetic Consultant team at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working across both our hospital sites at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.
This is a full‑time 10 PA Consultant Anaesthetist post, based at the Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH). Some anaesthetic sessions could be delivered cross‑site by mutual agreement and depending on service needs.
The successful candidate will work within our friendly Anaesthetic Consultant team and provide departmental leadership and supervision of a group of junior and mid‑grade doctors at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties of the job
Role‑specific duties:
Provide a safe, effective, responsive, and caring anaesthetic service to a level expected of a Consultant. Agree a job plan with the Clinical Director in Anaesthetics and work flexibly as far as possible to accommodate the needs of the Department. Ensure standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, quality improvement, and evidence‑based research. Participate actively in clinical governance, including reporting of incidents, investigation of serious incidents and any complaints. Demonstrate determination to meet or exceed the standards of the National Patients' Rights Charter. Familiarise with the Royal College of Anaesthetists' curriculum for Junior Doctor Training and contribute to their training requirements, including tutorials and educational supervision where required.

Professional Qualifications
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Entry onto GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
* MBBS or equivalent
* FRCA & CCT in anaesthesia (or CESR)
* Membership of relevant Specialist Societies
* MD or equivalent
Clinical Experience & Knowledge
* Experience of general and regional anaesthesia to the level expected of UK consultant anaesthetist for a wide range of surgical specialities
Clinical Skills & Ability
* Evidence of organisational ability
* Willingness to share administrative responsibilities
* Willingness to work flexibly to a level which would be reasonably expected of a consultant
* Understand the NHS system nationally; regionally and locally
* Aware of issues affecting current and future NHS practice
* Understands concepts and principles of clinical governance
* Able to demonstrate leadership capability with multi‑disciplinary teams
* Effective communicator and team worker
* Ability to take responsibility, cope with stressful situations and adapt to change
* Attended an NHS Management Course appropriate to consultant duties
* Critical and enquiring approach to knowledge acquisition
Research & Teaching skills
* Commitment to teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates, with evidence of active participation in teaching
* Understanding of general principles, scientific method, and interpretation of literature
* Willingness to participate in formal teaching sessions
* Thorough understanding of principles of medicine audit
* Completed audit projects with evidence of active participation in audit
* Attendance at specialist programmes to improve teaching, possession of certificates or diplomas of special expertise in teaching
* Evidence of personal research projects and their presentation
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals
Other specific requirements
* An appropriate, well‑organised, and clearly presented CV including experience in training Specialist Trainees
* Willingness to pick up occasional extra work both in and out of hours beyond the job plan with mutual agreement
* Willingness to work across Trust sites dependent on the needs of the service
* A sympathetic approach to patients and relatives
* Punctuality, reliability and approachability
* Ability to maintain excellent professional relations with others
* Demonstrable ability to effect positive sustainable change
* Awareness of current service development issues within HHFT
