The water window X-ray microscope project is an EPSRC-funded collaboration between the University of Southampton, the Franklin, and the Central Laser Facility at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. The project involves designing and constructing a lab-scale soft X-ray microscope for biological imaging using ultrafast lasers and coherent diffractive imaging techniques.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team constructing a new laser laboratory at Rutherford Appleton Labs on the Harwell Campus, working with laser scientists, physicists, chemists, computer scientists, and biologists to develop imaging techniques within a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
This role involves operating a new ultrafast laser laboratory for biological imaging. You will work with the coherent X-ray source to develop imaging methods for biological systems, exploiting the particular advantages of the source.
As a Post Doctoral Researcher, you will:
* Plan and conduct experiments, analyze results, and deliver research outputs such as reports and patents.
* Contribute to wider projects within the team.
* Publish research findings in papers, patents, and presentations.
* Supervise and support students or visitors in related research areas.
* Collaborate with other researchers and build a professional network.
* Communicate research effectively within a scientific context.
* Develop search and discovery skills and techniques.
* Work under supervision from a Scientist or Senior Scientist.

The role requires a PhD/DPhil (or equivalent), but candidates near completion may be considered with an initial salary of £36,500, increasing upon qualification.
