The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

In this role you will be

The Surrey/Sussex Operations Command are seeking to recruit a Police Staff National Firearms Instructors to be based in the Firearms Training office at Gatwick Police Station.

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated person to support us in delivering firearms training across both Forces.

The post holder will be required to deliver regular coached shooting and tactical training to new and current firearms officers and will be responsible for the design and delivery of training that is safe, current and accredited to ensure our Officers remain competent in their operational roles.

This role is being offered as a 12 month fixed term contract.

Skills & Experience

The postholder will be required to plan, prepare, deliver and assess firearms training within Operations Command to National Standards. There will also be a requirement to support the delivery of Firearms Command training, selection procedures and non firearms Police officer and staff inputs as required.


Duties will include:-


1. The development and implementation of structured firearms and non-firearms training programmes to National Police Firearms Curriculum (NPFTC) Standards for Authorised Firearms Officers and Police staff.

2. Plan, Prepare and Deliver ‘Dry & Live Fire’ Firearms Training Event Packages to be undertaken on approved Police & Military Ranges, compliant with the NPFTC National Standards.

3. Design and develop varied and fully NPFTC compliant, training events to ensure that weapon handling skills, safety procedures and shooting standards are developed and maintained.

4. Deliver required range training to new and current Firearms Officer’s, including all classifications shoots to ensure that firearms officers are operationally accredited in all weapons.

5. Identifying student development needs, supporting and managing the delivery of development plans for individual student needs in order to progress then to competent National standards.

Skills & Experience - Essential

6. Be qualified and accredited National Firearms Instructor (Police) and occupationally competent to design, plan, delivery and assess Authorised Firearms Officers at National Armed Response level within 12 months of application.
7. To have a training qualification to Certificate in Teaching (CET) level or equivalent and have a good understanding of the NPFTC, the Authorised Professional Practice (APP) and the National Decision Model (NDM).
8. Have training record based evidence of coaching and developing students in the use of Firearms and delivery of tactical training.
9. Evidence of safety management, Hazard identification and Risk assessing in all aspects of Firearms training delivery.
10. Be able to evidence high levels of self-motivation, excellent communication skills and team working. Evidence of IT literacy in: MS Window based Outlook, MS Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel applications.
11. Evidence of excellent skills in planning and organising at an individual and team level with the ability to take a holistic view of departmental needs and able to manage and prioritise demanding workloads.
12. A proven record of successfully passing national police qualification shoots on recognised police handgun and carbines.

Skills and Experience - Desirable


13. Have been occupationally competent in any of the following Police firearms roles within the last 12 months: Armed Response Vehicle, Close protection, MASTS, CBRN, Firearms Tactical Advisor and OFC.
14. Qualified to IOSH/NEBOSH Health & Safety standard
15. Qualified A1 Assessors Award or TAQA equivalent
16. Police Range Safety Inspector qualification through the College of Policing
17. Have experience of the Chronicle training management system.
