Overview

As part of our recruitment process for this bailiff vacancy, we share interview questions in advance for shortlisted candidates. If you are selected for interview, you will receive questions relating to the assessed behaviours when you are notified to book your interview slot. This helps you prepare with relevant examples from your experience. During the interview, the panel may ask follow-up questions to explore your responses in more depth. Strengths-based questions will not be shared in advance. Assessed behaviours are:

* Communicating & Influencing

Role context: This position involves visiting people in their homes and businesses, delivering documents across the designated area, and supporting court users with clear explanations of options to help resolve matters. The role requires empathy, professionalism, and the ability to handle emotionally charged situations while respecting customers.


Your role

This dynamic role offers varied challenges each day. It may suit you if you enjoy working away from an office, value teamwork and independent work, and want to develop a career within the Civil Service. The bailiff role in HMCTS currently attracts a £2,000 per annum allowance. The allowance is role-specific, non-pensionable and subject to change or removal without notice. Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week. HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing patterns where feasible and agreed prior to appointment. Minimum hours for part-time roles would be 30 hours per week over 5 days.


Working arrangements and eligibility

Hybrid Working arrangements may be available where business needs allow. If nationally advertised, appointments will be made to the nearest viable office to the candidate’s home postcode. All employees are expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local capacity. For MoJ employees, base locations may be changed to the nearest viable office within the National Office Network. Flexible working policies apply according to MoJ policy. Driving: a full UK driving licence entitling you to drive permanently in Great Britain is essential for lease car arrangements and travel between locations. A lease car may be offered after successful probation. Fuel allowances are paid. Full PPE and safety training provided. IT proficiency and ability to learn court case management systems are desirable.


Qualifications and experience

* Excellent communication and customer service skills
* Ability to assess circumstances quickly and adapt to changing plans
* Ability to plan and manage workload, with flexibility for changes at short notice
* Comfortable working independently or in a small team
* Full UK driving licence
* Willingness to undergo required security checks (DBS) and standard civil service recruitment checks
* Experience with IT and case management systems is advantageous


Interview and assessment

Interviews will be online with date to be confirmed. Requests for alternate dates will be considered in exceptional circumstances or as part of reasonable adjustments. Behaviours will be assessed as listed above. Strengths-based questions will be assessed but not shared in advance. Candidates should provide honest evidence of transferable skills, knowledge and experience relevant to customer service, administration and IT, with emphasis on attention to detail and organisational abilities. Plagiarism and misrepresentation are not tolerated.


Additional information
