Overview
We are looking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher to lead the Spanish Department. This is a key middle leadership position within our dynamic and forward-thinking school. The Head of Spanish will work closely alongside the Head of French, with both roles reporting directly to the Deputy Head Academic. The successful candidate will provide strategic and academic leadership for Spanish, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning, effective use of resources, and a continued focus on innovation and excellence. It is essential that the Head of Spanish remains up-to-date with developments in language teaching and wider educational practices relevant to their role.
Responsibilities
Staff
* To provide strong leadership, guiding and supporting colleagues within the Spanish department and modelling excellent teaching practice.
* To ensure that teaching within the Spanish department is of a consistently high standard, and to foster continuous improvement.
* To support Spanish colleagues in managing behaviour, homework, and pastoral issues appropriately.
* To maintain clear and effective communication within the department.
* To delegate responsibilities and tasks effectively within the Spanish team where appropriate.
* To ensure all members of the Spanish department are familiar with and adhere to School and Departmental Health and Safety policies.
* To carry out annual lesson observations of members of the Spanish department.
* To lead the CPD review process for members of the Spanish department on an annual basis.
* To ensure appropriate cover work is set when a member of the Spanish department is absent.
* To support the professional development of Spanish staff, including the effective induction of new colleagues.
* To liaise with staff in other departments to support pupils' development in literacy, numeracy, and ICT through Spanish.

Pupils
* To ensure that all pupils studying Spanish are able to learn effectively and make good progress.
* To monitor pupils' progress and performance in Spanish, using assessment data and tracking systems to inform planning and intervention.
* To ensure pupils receive effective academic mentoring and support in Spanish.
* To carry out regular scrutiny of pupils' work as a means of monitoring and improving the quality of teaching and learning in the department.
* To analyse pupil performance in both internal and external examinations, completing required documentation and using findings to inform departmental development.
* To promote Spanish through a variety of enrichment activities that foster enthusiasm, cultural awareness, and a love of language learning.
Parents
* To respond promptly and professionally to parental concerns regarding Spanish, seeking advice from the Deputy Head Academic, Senior Management Team, or Pastoral Team as appropriate.
* To record all contact with parents accurately and in a timely manner using the appropriate school platform.
Curriculum
* To lead the development of the Spanish curriculum, responding to the needs of pupilsas well as changes to the National Curriculum and examination specifications.
* To ensure smooth and effective progression in Spanish between Key Stages, including the transition from the Prep School to the Senior School.
* To regularly review, update, and enhance Schemes of Work to ensure they remain engaging, rigorous, and relevant.
* To liaise with the Timetabler to ensure appropriate staffing and timetabling of Spanish across all year groups.
* To contribute to the co-curricular life of the school by offering a range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities in Spanish.
Recruitment and Marketing
* To organise engaging Spanish activities and displays for School Open Days to promote both the subject and the wider school to prospective pupils and parents.
* To actively promote Spanish as an A-level option during Sixth Form Open Evenings and Taster Days.
* To plan and deliver Spanish activity sessions for Year 5/6 Taster Days and the Entrance Examination Day, as requested by the Senior Leadership Team.
* To provide regular updates and information to the Marketing Manager regarding pupil achievements, departmental events, and other relevant highlights.
Resources
* To manage the Spanish department budget effectively and responsibly.
* To regularly review the suitability and effectiveness of departmental resources, including textbooks, digital tools, and teaching materials, and to order new resources as needed.
* To maintain accurate stock records and clear financial documentation in line with school procedures.
* To ensure that all classrooms used for the teaching of Spanish are kept tidy, safe, and conducive to a stimulating and engaging learning environment.
Administration
* To hold regular, well-organised departmental meetings that encourage collaboration, planning, and the sharing of best practice; to ensure minutes are recorded and stored appropriately.
* To work closely with the Examinations Officer to ensure all administrative aspects of external examinations in Spanish are completed accurately and on time, including entries, predicted grades, and any non-examined assessments.
* To complete the Annual Operating Statement for the Spanish department.
* To produce and update the subject content for the GCSE and A-level Options Booklets.
* To review and revise the Spanish Department Handbook annually.
* To complete and analyse internal and external examination results, using this information to inform planning and departmental development.

* Commitment to supporting pupils applying for competitive university courses and/or apprenticeships.
Pastoral
* To take on the role of a Form Tutor
* To take an active role in all relevant pastoral matters
* To undertake any further reasonable duties as requested by the Headmistress.
