Maternal Medicine, Preterm & Multiple Pregnancy Specialist Midwife

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 7 Specialist Midwife to lead and develop maternal medicine, preterm birth and multiple pregnancy pathways within maternity services. The post holder will provide expert clinical support, education and service development, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and regional specialist networks to improve outcomes for women and babies.
Main duties of the job
* Act as the specialist midwifery lead for maternal medicine, preterm birth prevention and optimisation, and multiple pregnancy care across maternity services.
* Provide expert clinical support and advice for women with complex medical conditions, those at risk of preterm birth, and women with twin or multiple pregnancies.
* Triage and coordinate referrals into specialist pathways, ensuring timely review and appropriate escalation where required.
* Support development and implementation of evidence‑based pathways in line with national guidance and regional network standards.
* Work collaboratively with obstetric, fetal medicine, neonatal and wider multidisciplinary teams, including tertiary providers, to ensure coordinated care and seamless referral pathways.
* Lead education, audit, quality improvement and governance activity relevant to the specialist role.
* Act as a clinical resource for staff and families, supporting specialist clinics, service development and implementation of learning to improve safety, experience and outcomes for women and babies.
Qualifications
* Registered Midwife with current NMC registration
* Degree level education or equivalent relevant experience
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* Teaching / assessor qualification or equivalent experience
* Specialist qualification relevant to maternal medicine, fetal medicine or preterm birth care
* Master's level study or working towards
* Advanced communication, coaching or education qualification
Knowledge
* Knowledge of maternal medicine pathways and relevant national guidance
* Knowledge of preterm birth prevention and optimisation pathways
* Knowledge of multiple pregnancy care, including associated complications
* Knowledge of governance, audit, risk management and quality improvement processes
* Understanding of multidisciplinary working across maternity services and referral pathways
* Knowledge of regional Maternal Medicine Network pathways and standards
* Knowledge of fetal medicine and tertiary referral pathways
* Knowledge of national maternity safety initiatives and current best practice guidance
Skills
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work autonomously and prioritise workload effectively
* Ability to coordinate complex clinical pathways and manage competing demands
* Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary and cross‑organisational teams
* Ability to educate, support and develop staff in clinical practice
* Ability to analyse risk, elevate concerns and support safe decision-making
* Competent IT skills including Microsoft Office
* Experience of data analysis, audit reporting or service evaluation
* Experience of presenting information, teaching or delivering formal education sessions
* Experience of supporting service development or quality improvement initiatives
