What does a HVAC engineer do?

As a heating, ventilation and air conditioning engineer, you will ensure temperature and ventilation systems are working efficiently and safely.

Duties include:

* Surveying sites before installing heating, ventilation or air conditioning systems
* Planning placement of pipework, ducts and control panels
* Installing HVAC components
* Performing quality checks to ensure systems operate safely and efficiently
* Carrying out maintenance on HVAC systems
* Diagnosing and fixing faults
* Helping customers reduce their energy use


How to become a HVAC engineer

Several routes exist, including college courses and apprenticeships. Employers often value enthusiasm, willingness to learn and the ability to follow instructions.


College / Training

Potential courses:

* Level 1 Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
* Level 2 Diploma in Access to Building Services Engineering
* Level 2 Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Refrigeration Systems
* City & Guilds Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation
* Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating
* Level 3 Diploma in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems

Apprenticeship

You could train through an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship in building services engineering or refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump engineering.

* Level 2 NVQ in Heating and Ventilation
* Level 3 Building Services Engineering Craftsperson Apprenticeship
* Level 3 Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Engineering Technician Apprenticeship
* Level 3 Building Services Engineering Ductwork Craftsperson Apprenticeship
* SVQ at SCQF level 5 and 6 in Heating and Ventilating
* SCQF level 7 Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
* Level 2 NVQ in Heating and Ventilation Industrial and Commercial Installation


Potential Salary

* Newly trained HVAC engineer: £30,000 per year
* Experienced HVAC engineer: up to £65,000 per year*
