Company Description
We are looking for a Social Media Editor to join our growing Social team working across four of Reach’s top brands – Mirror, Express, Irish Star and Liverpool.com. Reporting to the Senior Social Editor, you will come up with new and creative ways to engage with users on both existing and emerging platforms. This is a fantastic opportunity to drive traffic to our social media platforms, increase brand awareness and maximise audience engagement.
Working closely with editors and reporters across our websites, this role requires someone quick‑thinking, flexible, with a strong news sense and great knowledge of social media and how to grow audiences. Reach Plc is the UK’s largest commercial news publisher, home to more than 130 trusted brands across national and local titles. Since 2023 we have been building out our US operation, launching four standalone brands in the Mirror US, Express US, Irish Star and Liverpool.com, covering news, sport, entertainment, politics and lifestyle for US audiences. We’re now entering a period of rapid growth and are looking to add ambitious and dynamic talent to our teams.
So if you enjoy a rapid pace, a lively newsroom, a flat structure and the opportunity to work in a scale‑up environment backed by the resources of a large organisation, Reach Plc could be perfect for you!
This is a hybrid position with a requirement to work 3 days a week in our Canary Wharf office in London. We are therefore open to candidates based in or commutable to London. Shifts are done on a rolling rota basis, including evenings and weekends, so we therefore require a level of flexibility in this role.
Job Description
As a Social Media Editor, you will find and pitch stories using analytics and tools to discover what’s already trending, and also identify the next big stories yourself. You will edit and post stories on our social pages, identify new platforms where our brands could thrive, and continuously create innovative ways to drive traffic to our sites and grow our audiences.
You will cover live events and breaking news on social media, delivering a fast turnaround on major stories across the US and around the world, and bring in exclusive stories that set us apart from our rivals.
You will monitor the external landscape to identify trends and remain up‑to‑date with changes on all social media platforms – communicating your findings, sharing knowledge and best practice to the Audience Director and across the newsroom.
Qualifications
You are an experienced and digitally savvy social media professional with knowledge of media law, an eye for detail and previous experience in a social media‑focused role within a newsroom environment. You have a sharp eye for a story, a keen interest in current affairs, and you are an excellent communicator able to sell stories that appeal to our audiences with flair, passion and skill. You are a fast yet accurate writer with web and social skills.
You are comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment, have a strong understanding of the power of social media, and possess detailed knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X and other social media platforms including Threads and Reddit, as well as a keen eye for emerging platforms. Knowledge of video is a bonus, and a background in sport, tabloid or breaking news is desirable, as is experience and knowledge of Echobox.
