The Department

The Music Department is a lively and much-loved part of school life, playing a central role in the experience of children from Reception to Year 6. Our aim is to foster a lifelong love of music through engaging classroom lessons, inspiring performances, and a wide range of co-curricular opportunities.

Music is taught throughout the Prep School, with pupils developing their singing, listening, composing, and performing skills in a supportive and creative environment.

Lessons are designed to encourage confidence, curiosity, and enjoyment, ensuring that every child can experience success and make progress.

Music-making extends far beyond the classroom. Many pupils learn individual instruments and take part in a vibrant programme of ensembles, choirs, and concerts. The department works closely with visiting specialist teachers to provide high-quality instrumental and vocal tuition.

The Chamber Choir is one of the flagship ensembles of the Prep School. Made up of talented and committed singers from the upper years, the choir performs regularly at school events, services, and concerts throughout the year. The ensemble provides pupils with the opportunity to develop their vocal technique, musicianship and confidence while performing a varied and exciting repertoire.

Performance opportunities are plentiful and form an important part of musical life. From informal sharing concerts and year-group performances to larger community events, pupils are encouraged to perform regularly and celebrate their achievements. Musical theatre is a particular highlight of the school calendar. Our recent production of The Wind in the Willows showcased the remarkable talents of pupils across the Prep School, both on stage and behind the scenes. The production was a tremendous success, bringing together acting, singing and instrumental music in a joyful celebration of creativity and teamwork.

The department is committed to nurturing every child's musical potential, whether they are taking their first musical steps in Reception or performing confidently as they prepare to move on to senior school.

Through a rich and varied programme of lessons, rehearsals and performances, pupils develop not only musical skills but also confidence, resilience, collaboration, and a genuine appreciation of the arts.

We are looking for individuals who share our enthusiasm for inspiring young musicians and who can create engaging learning experiences that encourage children to develop their skills and confidence.

Successful candidates will be passionate, adaptable, and committed to supporting the broad and ambitious life of the school.
