The role
As a Senior Transport Planner, you would help deliver the Camden Transport Strategy by delivering neighbourhood-based Healthy Streets projects, from localised safety schemes and Healthy School Streets (HSS) to low-traffic neighbourhood initiatives. The Safe & Healthy Streets team at Camden leads on Healthy Streets based project delivery. The role involves project managing the development and implementation of multiple small to medium size “Healthy Streets” projects within neighbourhoods across Camden, and providing high quality programme and project management support to Principal officers on projects such as the pedestrianisation of Camden High Street. Projects focus on localised road safety, bus priority, walking, cycling, traffic reduction and public realm improvement.
Examples of schemes Camden is currently consulting on or constructing include Fitzrovia Phase 1 (status: nearing construction), St George The Martyr (HSS) (status: consultation complete), and King Henrys Road Area (status: nearing construction).
The Senior Transport Planner will be responsible for all aspects of project delivery, ensuring schemes are delivered on time and to budget. This includes project planning, feasibility and optioneering, community engagement & consultation, report writing, stakeholder management, monitoring, funding, budgeting and financial controls. The role encourages innovative thinking about how Healthy Streets projects can support wider improvements to the public realm and climate action.
You will work across departments (planning, regeneration and sustainability, highways, parking, etc.) to ensure neighbourhood-based Healthy Streets projects support wider urban planning and sustainability initiatives, including Camden’s Climate Action Plan. You will help shape how these projects connect to Camden’s wider goals and collaborate with internal teams, Transport for London, the GLA and local communities.
About you
We are seeking a Senior Transport Planner with experience in project management or leadership on large projects or programmes, including transport planning advice on new developments, project governance and information management. You should be collaborative, capable of building relationships at all levels, and able to provide senior leaders with confidence that projects are on track in terms of time, cost and quality.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
* Knowledge of policy and statutory frameworks locally, regionally and nationally related to transport planning and related activities.
* Project management experience delivering Healthy Streets transport infrastructure projects on time and to budget.
* Experience with healthy streets and strategic transport planning projects, including input on planning applications; experience working on large, complex projects or programmes.
* Appreciation of streetscape design issues, accessibility and sustainability.
* Strong partnership work and ability to develop stakeholder relations on transport matters, including external organisations.
* Ability to communicate clearly during community engagement and with elected members; understanding of inclusive community engagement.
* Ability to support and oversee workloads of junior members or consultants; understanding of how consultants operate.
* Strong analytical and report writing skills; good presenting skills.
* Initiative, forward-thinking approach, and political awareness.
* Good interpersonal skills and understanding of corporate policies and strategies.
* Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in Transport Planning or project management.
