Overview

Health Care Assistant (Paediatric Audiology) – Band 3. Location: New Street Clinic, Barnsley. The closing date is 19 February 2026.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Health Care Assistant to join our friendly Children’s Audiology team. This role supports a multi-disciplinary team delivering paediatric audiology services including hearing assessments, ENT-led clinics, hearing aid assessments, and school hearing screening.

Aims of the service

* Provide hearing assessments within set time constraints
* Identify and manage any hearing problem found
* Through early intervention, support improvements in a child’s developmental milestones

You will be supported by and work alongside a multi-skilled, friendly and patient-focused team who provide a range of services to our patients and their parents/carers. You will work under the direction of the clinical team, undertaking tasks and duties as delegated.

Main duties of the job

The candidate would work under the direction of the clinical team. The main duties in Paediatric Audiology include:

* Preparation of consulting/testing rooms for use
* Chaperone ENT consultant, assist in procedures, support smooth running of the clinic
* Welcoming children and families to the department
* Second tester for pre-school age hearing assessments
* School hearing screening (training provided)
* Assist Audiologist
* Sort post/collections of hearing aid accessories for families
* Send off and log impressions for hearing aids
* Patient satisfaction questionnaires and feedback collection
* Implement ideas for additional feedback collection from families
* Help develop an online presence for the service
* Adhere to trust policies and procedures

Job responsibilities

Job summary

The post holder will, under the supervision/direction of registered health care professionals/associate practitioner, perform delegated interventions and care tasks for which they have received training, seeking support as necessary. As part of a healthcare team, provide high standards of safe and compassionate planned care to maximise recovery and rehabilitation potential.

Demonstrate sensitivity, empathy and active listening, and maintain positive and appropriate relationships with people at all times. Understand the care and treatment programmes required for a designated group of service users. Follow a care plan, advise and guide service users, family and carers in following prescribed interventions, and communicate changes to service users and professionals within own competence.

Concentrate for periods of time as required by the care intervention/care plan. This may include physical effort and risk considerations following risk assessments and health & safety guidelines. Exercise independence, initiative and judgement; assess situations and identify problems within own competence. Ensure care is delivered safely and respectfully in line with Trust values.

Provide feedback to the registered professional/clinical team to contribute to care/treatment planning. Understand care planning principles and enable service users to reach optimum functioning/independence/recovery. Implement care within established policies, procedures, protocols and care plans within own competence. Assist in organising and participating in a range of therapeutic groups and activities as delegated. Apply basic knowledge of longer-term conditions within the remit of care planning, providing advice and feedback to a registered professional.

Undertake physical aspects of care (e.g., moving and handling); use equipment (hoists, wheelchairs) as appropriate with proper instruction. Assist in dealing with verbal/physical aggression using de-escalation techniques where applicable. Attend to service users’ personal care needs and participate in flexible rostering to provide 7-day care as appropriate.

Person Specification


Physical Attributes

* A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (with fairness and equality considerations, especially where sickness relates to disability or pregnancy).
* Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements (with reasonable adjustments if necessary).


Personal Attributes

* Dress appropriately for the environment
* A valid driving licence and access to a car during the working day is essential (reasonable adjustments considered for applicants unable to drive due to disability)

Training

* Willingness to undertake all mandatory Trust training and refresher training relevant to the area
* Willingness to undertake job development and training
* Demonstrate knowledge of service user safety (e.g., violence & aggression prevention, moving and handling)


Qualifications

* GCSE A-D or 3-9 in English and Maths or equivalent
* Level 2 qualification or working towards Level 3; able to demonstrate competencies at Level 3
* Care Certificate or required to achieve within 12 weeks of commencement
* Apprenticeship Level 3 or NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent
* Experience of the speciality area; willingness to undertake further study


Experience

* Experience in providing personal care and related procedures for health/social needs
* Experience in a caring environment at Band 2 or equivalent
* Experience in dealing with the public; working as an effective team member
* Ability to work effectively, professionally and independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Demonstrated initiative, decision-making and prioritisation skills
* Commitment to user/carer involvement
