To ensure continued provision of Public Health Nursing services within Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council we are seeking to recruit a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse Specialist Practitioner who is passionate about wanting to lead and support families who are supported by Child Protection and Child in Need plans.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking an experienced Specialist Community Public Health Nurse SCPHN Specialist Practitioner to play a pivotal role in delivering the Healthy Child Programme and improving health outcomes for vulnerable children, young people and families. In this position, you will undertake comprehensive assessments and lead the management of Child Protection and Child in Need cases. You will offer specialist clinical expertise, ensuring the highest standards of evidence based care while championing a child centred approach across all elements of practice.
As a SCPHN Specialist Practitioner within the 019 Public Health Nursing Service, you will provide professional supervision, guidance and support to practitioners, helping to build capability and consistency across the workforce. You will work collaboratively with multi‑agency partners, contribute to clinical governance, prepare high‑quality reports, and support the development and implementation of policies and pathways. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated SCPHN who is passionate about reducing inequalities, influencing practice, and driving positive outcomes for the most vulnerable families.

Job responsibilities
To provide evidence‑based public health nursing practice that promotes and improves health and addresses inequalities of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children, young people and families within the borough. Lead the delivery of the healthy child programme to improve health and wellbeing of children in need. Provide Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) expertise to develop and implement structured interventions for children and families with complex needs, including assessments, appropriate management of risks and providing supervision to other team members.
Person Specification
General and Special Knowledge
* Knowledge and understanding of the Healthy Child Programme and related policies and pathways
* Knowledge and understanding of principles and benefits of reflection and use of models and tools to enhance understanding of complex clinical practice and safeguarding supervision
* Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of clinical governance and its implications for practice
* Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge and understanding of the impact of long‑term health and social issues and safeguarding
* Theoretical knowledge in child abuse and safeguarding children and its application into practice
* Expert knowledge of national statutory and local child protection safeguarding guidance, policies, and procedures and assessment and analysis of vulnerable families
Experience
* Significant experience of working in the community and with vulnerable children and families
* Extensive experience of managing care for safeguarding and complex cases using risk assessment and analysis to plan care
* Substantial experience of working collaboratively with other agencies
* Experience of leading and managing skill mix staff
* Experience of supervising and mentoring staff
* Experience of producing high‑quality reports
* Experience of providing education and training in Child Protection
Qualifications
* Registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse Level 6 or above qualification
* Training in providing clinical/restorative supervision and/or coaching and/or mentoring
* Evidence of continued professional development in safeguarding children to level 3
* Recorded Nurse Prescriber
* SCPHN Extended Practice
* Willing to undertake SCPHN additional field of practice (extended practice course)
Skills and Abilities
* Ability to analyse complex issues where material is conflicting and drawn from multiple sources
* Demonstrate capability to act upon information received, using experience to make inferences and decision making
* Able to contribute the health perspective at multi‑agency meetings, and confidently challenge decision making and articulate rationale effectively
* Ability to plan and prioritise workload within a changing and flexible work environment
* Substantial skills in health needs assessment, planning and evaluating interventions
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders as well as ability to constructively challenge when required
* Ability to take a lead role in complex child protection, child in need and looked‑after children and direct, support and supervise the other team members to support those families
