Roles and responsibilities
The post holder will facilitate and coordinate the delivery of Maternity clinical skills and emergency skills training to the multi‑professional maternity and obstetric teams. Provide the monitoring and reporting of all mandatory maternity training to support the attainment of NHSLA risk management standards. Maintain a senior professional midwifery role within the maternity service, providing expert evidence‑based care in daily practice acting as a role model to other staff.
* Planning and coordination of the maternity clinical and emergency skills programme in liaison with the Maternity Clinical Skills (MCS) team and the Head of Midwifery (HOM).
* Facilitate the development of maternity clinical and emergency skills for all midwifery and maternity support workers (MSW) in the maternity service.
* Assist in the delivery of orientation training programme for new maternity staffing and staff changing clinical areas in maternity service, ensuring that the appropriate training is offered and delivered.
* Liaise with clinical leads and Health Roster to ensure staff resources are made available for training and development opportunities.
* Ensure the communication and dissemination of training information related to educational offerings and mandatory training to ensure attendance and timely completion of training requirements.
* Embed the MSW role in maternity service and support midwives to manage this integration of the MSW into maternity.
* Ensure the maintenance of training records and the production of reports for monitoring mandatory and other skills training.
* Provide risk management training information and reports to the Maternity Safety groups.
* Participate in short and long‑term strategic development of the service and educational requirements within maternity.
* Attend relevant meetings, ensuring effective communication within the team and leading on actions and application of recommendations into the training and education programme.
* Evaluate training delivery by the MCS team and make necessary changes using evidence‑based educational models.
* Coordinate and deliver in‑situ live drills of maternity emergencies in partnership with the Obstetrics lead clinician and audit the response.
* Support senior midwives to develop the educational facilitation skills for teaching in the maternity departments.
* Ensure all junior and student midwives educational and training needs are met in conjunction with maternity leads for recruitment, retention and the learning support midwife.
* Liaise with specialist midwives to promote practice development and ensure effective systems for delivery of training within maternity.
* Support future development initiatives in maternity, providing support for new or altered roles and practice.
* Provide educational support for MSW undertaking the foundation degree and facilitate training requirements in the workplace.
* Support the MSW recruitment process through identifying development needs.
* Support the delivery of Excellence in Care certificate in conjunction with the Lead Nurse for Healthcare Assistant Development.
Professional responsibilities
* Observe NMC rules and guidance in liaison with the Supervisor of Midwives.
* Foster a working environment where midwives can work as autonomous practitioners.
* Develop trust policies and protocols pertaining to midwifery practice and maternity.
* Implement Trust policies and protocols, ensuring staff in maternity carry out all care within these.
* Maintain good standards of care and implement recommendations from the government or professional bodies.
* Maintain efficient communication and working relationships with other professional groups and colleagues.
* Support the Supervisor of Midwives and liaise where appropriate.
* Provide guidance to mothers and families, recognising the demands placed on professional colleagues.
* Be flexible and undertake duties in other areas of the unit as required.
Development and research responsibilities
* Contribute to the development, implementation and validation of training materials for multi‑professional groups in maternity and obstetrics.
* Include competency‑based assessment tools, training records and electronic learning developments.
* Monitor and review the effectiveness of training, modifying as necessary.
* Contribute to the development and updating of local evidence‑based standards, policies and guidelines related to medical devices.
* Participate in audit, review and evaluation of the service.
* Liaise with multi‑professional groups regarding equipment procurement and training support.
Person Specification – Education and Qualifications
* Senior practising midwife with evidence of practice in all areas of midwifery.
* Evidence of post‑registration education.
* Teaching and assessing/mentor preparation qualification.
* Degree level or equivalent experience.
Desirable
* Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Qualification.
* NLS Instructor Status.
* Simulation Facilitator certificate.
Experience
* Previous comprehensive midwifery experience.
* Experience of teaching clinical skills and competency assessments.
* Evidence of previous management experience.
Skills and knowledge
* Teaching skills, including various teaching styles and presentation skills.
* Effective communication with colleagues and patients.
* Facilitating effective team working.
* Knowledge of recent midwifery research and clinical audit.
* Computer literacy: Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel.
* Evidence of professional development relevant to the role, and ability to apply research to practice.
Desirable skills
* IV assessors course.
* Simulation debrief experience.
