Safety Advisor – ASTI Projects Team

The GB energy system is rapidly transforming as we target Clean Power by 2030 and NetZero by 2050. The distribution network is vital in this transformation as we look to accommodate thousands of electric vehicles and heat pumps in people’s homes and connect large volumes of solar and wind. This will require us building out our network at a rate we have not seen this century. And, as one of the Distribution Network Operators, we have a key role to play in the Great Grid Upgrade – it’s an essential part in enabling the accelerated strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects across England and Wales.

Reporting to the Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) Manager, you will provide essential SHEQ support to our regional delivery teams. Your coaching, advice, and training will motivate and inspire managers, staff, and contractors to ensure legislative compliance and promote continuous improvement, ultimately achieving and sustaining world-class health and safety performance.

You will play a key role in implementing, coordinating, executing, and monitoring all aspects of Quality Assurance, ensuring compliance with relevant ISO Standards, National Grid policies, procedures, specifications, and the wider National Grid Quality Management System.

As a source of expertise on safety, health, environment, and quality issues, you will provide specialist advice on Process Safety, CDM, materials, and equipment. You will drive the implementation of our company strategy, empowering line managers and staff to take responsibility and accountability, with a strong emphasis on behavioural safety.

This role offers a flexible hybrid working approach, allowing you to balance office, site and home working.

Responsibilities

* Support projects in the delivery of company SHEQ strategy and provide QA engineering support to ensure continual improvement of the National Grid Quality Management System (QMS), liaising with Technical Assurance as required.
* Provide appropriate H&S and quality engineering input into the tender and contract award process, including review of the QA, materials and process safety engineering aspects.
* Provide a single point of contact for advice and expertise on safety, health and quality including liaison with CDM and project H&S leads to ensure the effectiveness of the Construction Phase Plans during the lifecycle of the project.
* Provide support to the EPC PMs and Project Supervisors in expediting the timely close out of notified defects and by challenging the Contractors Quality Management System in order to drive through contractual compliance and continual improvement.
* Liaise with Principal Contractors to ensure the preparation and implementation of Project Quality Plans, Site Quality Plans and Inspection & Test Plans in accordance with the Works Information.
* Provide independent Health, Safety and Quality Assurance advice and audit capability to Infrastructure Development & Delivery Project Teams through design, pre-construction & construction, testing & commissioning phases.

Qualifications

* A relevant safety qualification, such as the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management, and a chartered membership of IOSH or progress towards it.
* A degree in safety, environmental, or engineering disciplines is preferred, along with an IEMA certificate.
* Understanding of quality management and NEBOSH inspection requirements, along with the application of inspection and test plans to ensure compliant project delivery.
* Experience in the safe management of construction works, including the prevention and investigation of incidents.
* Ideally, you will have a track record of developing and sustaining safe working cultures and advising operational managers on safety legislation and policies.
* A valid UK driving licence is required, as the role involves travel between home, office, and site locations.
