Overview
The post holder will provide infection support for the Guy's hospital site, as part of a rotation that supports routine clinical infection work at Guy's, the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. The clinical Infection sub-specialties at Guy's include infections in patients with cancer, renal transplant and urology services, a well-established OPAT team, a proposed centre of excellence for complex elective orthopaedic/spinal services and the regional thoracic surgical, head and neck and ENT and urology groups. Individual consultants will develop their own areas of specialist expertise over time, all will deliver ward-based infection consults/telephone advice, multi-disciplinary clinical meetings and ward rounds, ID outpatient clinics and a potential new OPAT service for RBHH sites.
Responsibilities

* Support induction and training of StRs rotating via postgraduate teaching and training.
* Develop local clinical guidelines, manage outbreaks, and deliver key performance with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship (bacterial and fungal).
* All consultants will have programmed activities allocated for antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, OPAT.
* Participate in the non-resident on-call rota.
Placements and Sites
Each post-holder will have a rotational post across at least two of the RB&H and Guy's sites. The specific site involvement may be tailored to the interests of the post holders while meeting core service needs.
About the Trust sites
Guy's Hospital: Major elective centre with 400 beds and hosts the largest dental hospital in Europe.
Harefield Hospital: Regional centre for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery; international centre for adult heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation. It has 168 beds, 5 theatres and 4 catheter laboratories.
The Royal Brompton: Specialist cardiothoracic centre focusing on heart and lung diseases, with adult and paediatric services and an ECMO-capable unit.
Contract and Conditions
Pay scheme: Hospital medical and dental staff; Grade: Consultant; Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum; Contract: Permanent; Working pattern: Full-time. Reference: C9196-25-1668.
Job Responsibilities
Main place of employment: Rotational across at least two sites (RB&H and Guys). The role may be tailored to interests while meeting core service needs. You may be required to work at other trust locations as needed.

CPD, Appraisal and Mentoring
CPD participation required. Leave up to 30 days over three years (approx. 10 days/year). Annual appraisal and GMC revalidation; SARD system for appraisal documentation. Mentoring and New Consultants Forum available.
Job Planning
Anticipated 10 Programmed Activities (PA) per week, primarily on one site at a time. Detailed timetable and allocations (e.g., Infection Control, antimicrobial stewardship, OPAT, DCC, SPA) will be finalised during job planning and reviewed annually. The timetable examples provided cover a typical weekly pattern with on-call and SPA allocations. Flexible shift patterns may be required to meet patient needs.
On Call and Rotas
First year: 1 in 5 ID/Microbiology on-call rota (Category A) depending on site (GSTT or RBHH). After the first year, there may be an option to participate in HCID unit on-call at St Thomas’ depending on experience. Category A indicates potential on-call duties by telephone or on-site return in exceptional cases. Category B options may be available depending on clinical needs.
Qualifications
Essential
* Full and Specialist GMC Registration and current licence to practise.
* UK-trained applicants must have Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award by interview; non-UK trained applicants must show evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
* On GMC Specialist Register for Microbiology OR Microbiology and Infectious Diseases OR Virology.
Desirable
* MRCP or equivalent; FRCPath or equivalent.
Clinical Experience
Essential
* Comprehensive experience across the range of adult infectious diseases.
* Experience in writing clinical infection and/or laboratory guidelines.
* Working knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control in acute care, including management of outbreaks and antimicrobial stewardship.
Desirable
* OPAT expertise; experience leading or managing a diagnostic laboratory.
Clinical Skills
* Operating an Infectious Diseases clinical consult service and contributing to multidisciplinary meetings.
Audit, IT and Research
* Record of clinical governance, audit, service development and IT skills; involvement in quality improvement projects.
* Experience teaching/training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
* Desirable: Research publications or engagement with research ethics.
Leadership
* Accountability; ability to lead, make decisions and exercise appropriate authority.
