Job Description

You will join the team responsible for the management of field telemetry equipment and hydrometric data collection, ensuring accurate and timely data and information are provided to customers of the Hydrometry & Telemetry Team (H&T). This role is a combination of field and office work, so you must be willing to work outdoors often in demanding weather conditions, all year round, and travel to both rural and urban sites. Working across the southern part of the Thames Area on rainfall, river flow/level and groundwater monitoring sites, you will gather, quality‑assure and provide scientific data to internal and external customers. You will work both in a team of officers and alone, so must be self‑motivated and a team player. You will be responsible for delivering the programme for your own section of the network, including elements of asset management, public safety and the delivery of national project upgrades.

Responsibilities

Responding to incidents is a central part of the role. You'll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. Officers in the Thames Area have the Area Hydrometry Officer as their duty role, which may attract an additional payment and full training will be available.

The Hydrometry & Telemetry Team, based in the Goldcrest House office, operates the hydrometric network of assets for the southern part of the Thames Area. Key customers include Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) and Water Resources, and external customers include the Met Office and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH). The service supports the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities relating to Flood Forecasting/Warning and Water Resources.

Experience / skills required

* Experience in managing large quantities of data
* Good knowledge of telemetry systems and confidence using environmental monitoring equipment
* Well‑developed influencing and practical problem‑solving skills
* Willingness to work outside often in demanding weather conditions, all year round
* Confidence working in and near water
* Confidence driving in all weather conditions and to remote locations – a full manual UK driving licence is required

Desirable skills

* Some understanding of incident management and a commitment to learning and development, health, safety and wellbeing through available courses and experiences

Competence

* Scientific Knowledge – apply scientific knowledge to provide evidence to internal and external customers
* Data and Information Management – collect, analyse, interpret and share data appropriately
* Takes Decisions and Solves Problems – deliver solutions by analysing information and taking timely decisions
* Manage Your Health and Safety – ensure behaviour reduces risks to yourself and others

Contact and additional information

You will cover sites across the southern part of the Thames Area. Part of your time will be site‑based; days in the office will be agreed with your line manager. This aligns with our hybrid working model, allowing individuals to work either at home or at our offices. For further information contact Alistair Wilkinson: alistair.wilkinson@environment-agency.gov.uk or Ed Dimmock: ed.dimmock@environment-agency.gov.uk. An appropriate vehicle will be provided for field work, and the role is eligible for a lease vehicle. A full UK manual driving licence is required. Interviews are likely to take place in December and will be held face‑to‑face at our Goldcrest House office.

Licence requirements

Full UK manual driving licence.
