South East Business Insider is looking for an ambitious, commercially minded journalist to step into a senior editorial role at the heart of the region’s business community.
As Deputy Editor, you will shape high-quality journalism for a director-level audience, build deep sector expertise - perhaps in property or corporate finance, and represent Insider at influential events with the region’s most senior business leaders.
This is a B2B journalism role for someone who combines editorial experience with confidence in front of an audience.
You’ll write authoritative business features and produce data-led business rankings for our website and magazine; you'll organise and chair high-profile events including roudtables and business breakfasts; and you'll also become a trusted voice across key South East sectors, working closely with editorial, events and commercial teams to grow Insider’s influence, membership and reputation.
We welcome applications from experienced journalists as well as senior industry professionals looking to move into journalism, particularly those with backgrounds in professional services, property or corporate finance.
Job Objective
* To write articles for Insider magazine that are well-informed, accurate and which contain information that is of a level to be of interest to company directors, owners and senior business leaders in the South East of England.
* To ensure that articles are up to date and include good quality pictures as well as additional supporting information (for example lists, statistics, or information on where to find further details). Wherever possible, unique information or insight should be conveyed to increase the benefit to readers.
* To work with the events department and the South East Editor to ensure that Insider’s events attract quality speakers, quality entries to award dinners and quality attendees.
* To take responsibility for a sector [as agreed with the Editor] - possibly property or dealmaking - and to become and be seen as an expert in the South East with regard to this sector. To also take responsibility for other sectors as required. The Deputy Editor must have a well-rounded view of business issues in the South East of England.
* To contribute new ideas for features, breakfast events and roundtables.
Key Tasks
The following is not an exhaustive list of tasks but is meant to be indicative of what is expected of the Deputy Editor
The Deputy Editor is:
* required to keep their own diary, be highly organised and manage their time effectively in order to be able to prioritise the events and editorial workload to meet tight deadlines
* able to work calmly under pressure with a strong sense of accountability, accuracy and pride in the publication
* willing to lead at South East Insider events such as networking breakfast debates, round-table discussions and black-tie dinners. The Deputy Editor will be required to source speakers who are leaders or experts. The more senior the better. The Deputy Editor will be the point of contact for the Events team with regards to that event.
* an engaging writer, who demonstrates they are able to get to the heart of and understand complex business subjects
* in addition to the magazine, the Deputy Editor is required to take responsibility for special projects or publications produced alongside the main magazine (for example Investment Guides).
* required to take responsibility for organising, chairing, hosting events in front of audiences from 8 to over 800 and write up coverage of round-table, breakfast and other events
* required to send the event team contacts and leads to encourage entries into awards
* required to be social-media savvy, active on Insider’s social channels and keen to engage with our audience in print, in person and online
* required to keep accurate records and notes of their interviews which must be properly dated in the case of written notes or in the case of taped interviews filed as directed by the South East Editor in the appropriate database for taped interviews etc.
* required to send to the digital news writer leads for exclusive news stories
* to ensure that sufficient meetings are held every month with the right contacts in order to be an expert within his specialist sector(s) and as a result generate and contribute new ideas for events and features.
* to become the source of quality intelligence from the marketplace to guide decision-making or simply provide good knowledge of what is happening in the market in order to inform key management decisions. For example, feedback from Insider’s and competitor events in the region, or feedback about competitor newsletters and other publications in the region.
* to ensure that membership increases as a result of ensuring business cards are forwarded to the membership team, actively encouraging businesspeople to become members or participating in a trial period to receive the magazine and doing all that is necessary to actively achieve an increase in member numbers
