Applications are invited for the post of a Locum Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeon at Colchester Hospital, part of the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust (ESNEFT). This fixed‑term position supports the ESNEFT Complex Obesity Service and elective recovery for Upper GI and General Surgery patients.
The role requires advanced laparoscopic surgery training, a commitment to teaching, and ideally a record of publications.
The post holder will contribute to the department’s general surgery work, participate in the general surgery on‑call rota, and cover bariatric on‑call duties. Responsibilities include supporting elective recovery, reducing long‑wait breaches, and ensuring high standards of care.
General Responsibilities
* Provide consultant‑led service with quality care
* Collaborate with the multi‑professional team to develop care pathways and guidelines
* Develop and maintain good working practices with wards, out‑patients and the ED
* Promote close working links with colleagues, other departments and primary care
* Offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior colleagues, nursing colleagues and other multidisciplinary team members
* Ensure appropriate information is made available to measure clinical performance and establish benchmarks
* Maintain a robust process for reviewing quality of services and ensuring highest standards
* Model professional leadership aligned with corporate values
* Ensure junior doctors’ training meets College requirements
* Participate in appraisal of medical staff per Trust policy
* Contribute to ICENI teaching faculty by delivering or facilitating courses/programmes
Clinical Responsibilities
* Provide on‑call cover as a general surgeon
* Provide on‑call cover as a bariatric surgeon
* Provide specialist upper GI elective services, including bariatric surgery
* Contribute elective Upper GI and General Surgery activity to support recovery and reduce 52‑ and 65‑week breaches
