Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Functional Safety Engineer – Systems Control to be based at our customer’s site in Gaydon.
Our Embedded Systems Solutions department (ESS) encompasses all activities outlined under the Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) process framework, including systems engineering, software engineering, coding, and all levels of functional testing. Beyond core development, ESS also integrates critical supporting processes such as project management, risk assessment, functional safety, and cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with ASPICE standards and delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality embedded systems & solutions.
The Role:
We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Functional Safety Engineer to lead the Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) and Functional Safety Concept Development for advanced control systems. This role is pivotal in ensuring compliance with safety standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or ARP4761, and in shaping the safety architecture of next-generation systems.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including system architects, software developers, hardware engineers, and validation specialists to define safety goals, derive functional safety requirements, and develop robust safety concepts across the product lifecycle.
Area of Responsibility
Hazard Analysis & Risk Assessment
1. Conduct HARA for complex control systems, identifying potential hazards and to classify the hazardous events caused by malfunctioning behaviour of the item, operational scenarios, and associated risks
2. Determine Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL) or Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) based on severity, exposure, and controllability
3. Formulate the safety goals with their corresponding ASILs related to the prevention or mitigation of the hazardous events in order to avoid unreasonable risk.
Functional Safety Concept Development
4. Develop and refine functional safety concepts aligned with system architecture and safety goals
5. Define functional safety requirements and allocate them to system, hardware, and software levels
6. Support the creation of technical safety concepts and deriving HW-SW interface specification (HSIS).
Cross-Functional Collaboration
7. Work closely with system architects to ensure safety requirements are embedded in system design
8. Interface with software and hardware teams to ensure traceability and feasibility of safety requirements
9. Participate in Verification and confirmation reviews, Safety Analysis (FTAs, FMEAs), and technical assessments
Documentation & Compliance
10. Prepare and maintain safety documentation including HARA reports, Functional Safety concept (which includes Functional safety requirements and Safety Analysis reports)
11. Ensure compliance with ISO 26262 (Part 3, 4, 5 and 6) or relevant safety standards
12. Support audits, assessments, and safety case development for regulatory or customer approval
Knowledge / Experience
13. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
14. Strong experience in functional safety engineering, preferably in automotive or industrial domains.
15. Strong understanding of ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or equivalent safety standards
16. Experience with HARA, FMEA, FTA, and safety lifecycle methods and processes.
17. Proficiency in requirements management tools (., DOORS, Polarion) and Safety Analysis tools ( Isograph, Medini).
18. Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
19. Certified Functional Safety Engineer (., TüV SüD, SGS-TüV)
20. Experience with safety-critical embedded systems and control software (up to ASIL D).
21. Familiarity with cybersecurity standards (., ISO/SAE 21434)
22. Exposure to ADAS, autonomous systems, or electrified powertrains
23. Knowledge of safety case development and tool qualification
